I have been seeing this term "soak" that I have never seen this term in any star wars or any other RPG. where is does this come from and what does this term encapsulate. _________________ "EXECUTE ORDER 67. Its commonly used in place of your damage resistance (str/hull/vehicle body) roll when someone gets hit. You 'Soak' the damage. _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Not sure of its origins, but its a term used in the White Wolf rpgs such as Vampire the Masquerade and Werewolf the Apocalypse. _________________ "This job is 90% talking to people and 10% shooting at them." |

What he said.
Anyone who has played White Wolf RPGs probably uses the term whenever you they make an opposed toll to resist damage
GM "You got hit, 21 damage, roll to soak !!"
"soak" being shorter and easier to say "resist damage"
White Wolfs Vampire and Werewolf being role playing games that were also popular during the same era WEG's Star Wars. |

You nailed it. Except that WoD is still quite alive and well. They are still releasing new stuff for nWoD and they are also rereleasing older stuff in a very nice 25th Anniversary format. _________________ Knowledge is power, and power corrupts...so what does that say about knowledge?

I think it originated in Ars Magica. In that RPG characters resisted damage with their Soak roll. The folks behind Ars Magica, a company called Lion Rampant eventually turned into White Wolf and the term was ported over to their World of Darkness RPG line.
As far as the term being used here, I suspect I had a hand in that. Being familar with multiple RPGs, including Ars Magica and the WoD line, I probably used Soak in place of the STR or Body STR, or Hull roll to resist damage, as soak is easier to type and can apply to characters, vehicles and ships. |

We've used the term "soak" forever, also. Not sure who introduced me to the term... Probably one of my first GMs who had played everything under the sun by the time I started. "Soak" translates to "Near-Hit" in our games now days... _________________ "Sarcasm is just one of the many services I provide."
