There have been hints in the EU over the years that Holocrons had a degree of Force Sensitivity, in that they could sense a person's degree of training in the Force, and withhold knowledge until the person in question was sufficiently trained or mature to understand what they were being taught. If that were the case, it might be possible to give this droid a few dice in Control and Sense to represent the Holocron's ability to both control itself and read its "students"...

And taken one step further, might Holocrons have a limited degree of sentience, in the form of the gatekeeper personality? If a Shard is a fully sentient in the form of a highly complex energy matrix inside a crystal, isn't it possible for the crystalline matrix inside of a Holocron to have a limited degree of intelligence and self awareness?

That was kind of my plan for this NPC. I am considering the most advanced holocrons to be a limited immortal version of the Jedi Master that created them. They are incapable truly learning new skills, but may unlock hidden knowledge. In this case the limited force sensitivity will come as he instructs a padawan, as will any specific force skills it teaches.

Perhaps part of the crystalline matrix could have been made up, in part, at least, by a Tsil from Nam Chorios. They're a sentient crystalline species that had members taken from their home planet for use in any applications where crystals could be used. Luke Skywalker underwent a mission to recover as many of these Tsils as possible in the novel Planet of Twilight, after it was discovered that a peculiar property of the planet meant that even the smallest Force use resulted in Force storms that would wrack the planet (kind of his way of making up for inadvertently causing such damage). It's silly to assume that he got them all, so possibly one could have found itself inside this matrix. While Tsils don't talk, or communicate in complete thoughts, they do communicate through telepathy and put images into others' minds.

It's a thought, anyway...

Oh, now I like that. A Tsil acting as a living guardian lock for a Jedi Master's Holocron. The Tsil would have had to voluntarily accept the job, unless this is a Sith Holocron.

The Tsil might go ahead and accept the job willingly if it sensed urgency when the Holocron was being created.

I like the idea of the Tsil or one of the shard species in a holocron, the Jedi are known for not be very progressive on certain things and a powerful Jedi could easily have put a Tsil or a Shard in a holocron never thinking that they were intelligent force sensitive beings.
