I'm planning on something big in my campaign - My players are part of the first specforce groups put together by the rebellion and instrumental in its success. But some of them are lacking in their conviction.

As such I am planning on the empire burning the atmosphere of a rare atmosphere planet - Geran - their atmosphere is required for their native species to breath and one of players is from their.

I plan on them being there to witness it.

But would the empire do this?

They orbitally bombard planets but - how often?
I know they destroyed alderaan - but did they ever ruin a species as severely as doing so to geran?

IIRC the ISB mentions that fleets of imperial ships have bombarded planets into lifelessness, and scorched several others.. but can't find a list of how many or what they were anywhere.

Absolutely. And not just outright destroying them, either. In the Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy, mention is made of a planet which was destroyed by having its entire water supply forcibly taken from it, leaving the planet a barren desert. On top of that, it was seeded with insectoid vermin (resembling large scorpions) whose toxic bodily wastes poisoned the planet's ground itself. This was ordered by Palpatine to set an example to nearby worlds.

Basically, there are worse things the Empire can do than simply destroy a world.

If you are looking for more mundane methods of destruction, Warhammer 40K's Imperium of Man's Exterminatus policy includes things like melta-bombs that slag a planet with blasts of intense heat, cyclotronic warheads that explosively ignite the planet's atmosphere, or virus bombs that introduce a lethal bio-weapon that consumes all organic life, leaving only a mass of toxic chemicals in its wake.

Or like Darth Cased (Jacen) tried to do to Kasshykk, burn down all the follege, creating one heck of a firestorm, which poisons the atomosphere with toxic gasses.
Alternately you have the orbital night cloak that Zjini tried to use to ruin Dathomir.
