Does the jawa speak in her trade language, or just really fast Basic?

The Jawa speaks in Jawa Trade language to the party, but understands basic. I hand waved everyone being proficient in Jawa trade language as they party had either been assigned to her by Jabba as muscle or had previously attached themselves to her as either friends or crew members.

It's more fun to watch her speak to NPCs and have the other party members translate her for those who can't understand.

I love the fun dynamics that arise from language differences.

Too often i see DM's hand waiving the need for language rolls or having language issues creep into their games.

I for one like the idea of multiple languages in my campaign, but all those language rolls does not seem in the "spirit" of Star Wars. In the games species are constantly talking to each other and understanding each other.

What I do in my games to emulate this, when a players species cannot speak Galactic Base and its a common language I leave it up to the others players if they understand that language or not.

When the character speaks, I have them use a work that is associated with them and end the sentence with the same word. I explain the other players, if they understand the language, yellow sub-titles appear at the bottom of the screen.

Example: Meep is Sullustan and he is instructing someone on repairing a hypermatter igniter. "MEEP Hey not that valve, the other one, yes, the yellow ... PULL IT NOW ... NOW! MEEP"

I have a rodian puts "oota" at the start and "goota" on the end as well as a wookiee player who puts "bark" at the beginning and end. Oh yeah some players pay homage to Team America and toss "derka derka" at the beginning and end of a narrative.

I hear you there.

I'm not necessarily against party members (or, probably more aptly, SOME party members) being able to understand other party members who don't speak Basic, but there needs to be a reason for that. Usually, in a case like that, especially when it's a new party starting out, there needs to be a really good backstory that includes those specific characters having some kind of past together, for a good bit of time, that has enabled said character to learn enough to be able to understand. I've had a character or two that, due to their background, had experience with Wookiees, and so could understand Shirywook; however, their Languages score was unchanged, and the ability to understand Wookiees did not extend to other languages.

Also, as I mentioned Anomids earlier, they are born without vocal cords; they speak through the use of a vocalizer mask; in fact the masks have become a part of their culture, with some of them being quite ornate. As for their sign language, only beings with six fingers per hand can learn to 'speak' it, and anyone trying to interpret it, but not having the specialization, have their difficulty increased by TWO levels due to the complexity.

I realize that the Jawa trade language is not quite the same, because the book says it's virtually unintelligible to other species when the Jawas WANT it to be so...but the fact that they specifically spell out language difficulties says, to me at least, that the language barrier is something that is meant to be there. To me, it provides an opportunity for players to do some really good roleplaying. It also gives an opportunity for players to put dice skills that aren't used so much, which plays to the lament I've always heard from GMs about players only ever sinking dice into battle-related skills, thus leaving the party full of tanks, but no well-rounded characters.

Not dogging anyone's preferences out here, just saying how I see things.

Agreed. Many games i have been part of, the know skills have usually taken a wayside to the other groups, dex and mech especially. Heck even the per ones are sometimes tossed to the curb. That is why i like hitting them ON those weaknesses.

Since I love diversity in RL and like to see it in my games, I am wondering what species, genders, and what-not make up your groups.

What do your groups look like?

Players or characters? Mostly human players in my group.... mostly.

My players also tend to be mostly human. I for example only have 3.11% alien DNA myself.
