I prefer the version put forth in SWMB sourcebooks. The moffs turn into local warlords. Course that version of events just happens to suit miniature gaming best. It lets you paint up imperial figures in different colors, for example, or lets you have two "imperial" armies fight each other.

In deed, the old EU was full of imperial factions, some fighting eachother.

could even be interesting to have one faction "ally" with the rebles/new republic

That's something i've yet to explore.. Having pcs try to stir up animosity between two imp warlord factions, so they go at one another, letting the rebellion/new republic come in to save the day/mop up..

This is still the new canon. While Aftermath and Lost Stars follow what comes to be known as the core Imperial Remnant, you still have a number of Moffs and Admirals who say "Screw it, I'm the new Emperor of this sector, fight me, you bantha poodoo."
