I have slowly been reading through the Sourcebook, from cover to cover. Man, this is something I should have done decades ago when I first got the book. There's LOTS of good stuff in this book.

I just finished reading about the rancor. This may have been changed with with EU, but I like what was written.

No one really knows where the rancor came from. No one knows its home planet. The thing was in the hold of a ship that crashed on Tatooine. Some Jawas inspected the crash then sold the salvage rights to one of Jabba's lackeys.

When the rancor starting tearing them up--the party from Jabba's castle--one of the screaming gamoreans starting yelling, "Rancor! Rancor!" It was referring to one of the Gamor demons.

Bib Fortuna, the Twi-lek, rescued what was left of the party and gave the rancor to Jabba as a present on the Hutt's birthday. Jabba loved it and made Fortuna his major domo.

No other "rancor" is known to exist.

Yeah, The Courtship of Princess Leia introduced a planet of rancor-riding witches, so I understand.

Yeah, I read that, back when it was out in hardback. I don't remember much except for a planet of Rancors, the introduction to the Witches of Dathomir, and a cool scene where a Nebulon B was falling into the atmosphere of the planet, and Han, in the Falcon, escapes.

I preferred the WEG one of a kind Rancor. Witches indeed.

The original books are a treasure trove of mystery and ideas. It was great when we had just enough information to spark our imaginations rather than having everything codified and explained. The flip side of that is we learned there IS a planet of rancors and they're not all ravenous beasts with a taste for bipedal swine. Wink

I can't explain how much and how long I've hated that an author was allowed to publish these things. I even like Jar-Jar Binks more than them.
