Or for the hard core people who still don't buy that... when did R2 have to use any of those modifications in IV, V, and VI. None come to mind that I can think of. Although correct me if I'm wrong. Perhaps he had them and just... never used them.

Would've been nice if he could fly before he fell into the swamps on Dagobah.

Or how about when he rolled off Jabba's sail barge?

Flying could've come in handy in a number of instances.

Ah well... I gues I'll just pretend like it never happened...

That's usually best. Fewer headaches and less post traumatic stress that way. Laughing

Another possible explanation may be that many of the droid manufacturers were not human. The Empire would have limited the non-human run companies with its typical gusto. Which would make it plausible that the rebellion just could not find the parts to keep R2 up to his ROTS status. But mostly I agree with the others, the prequels were not made to be continuous so much as to sell the movies.

Actually, that would be correct, from what I've seen. Granted my experience isn't all-encompassing, but EVERY droid manufacturer I've read anything about MIGHT have a sentient at the top, but everything below that was droids. So really it IS all non-human. But the Empire didn't have the same prejudice against droids, because heck, you can program 'em any way you want.

Actually I was thinking more along the lines of the species who designed and manufactored droids were not human, i.e. Verpine although you are correct in saying that most of the assembly lines were droid run, the majority of the research in droid technology would have been conducted by non-human sentients.

Here is my take on it. Anakin had R2 for quite a while and is known for his technical skills. He added the rockets and various other bits. After R2 becomes property of the government of Alderran they remove these extras bits and bring him in line with, "The Alderran code and regulation book governing the standards of R series droids" Its obviously covered in section 143.238.17. You know governments, it doesn't matter that he was better before. They are going to use standard parts and do it their way.

I like that explanation better than the warranty on the rockets expiring explanation or something like that from Holonetnews.com.
