Here is some more information on the history and geography of Thractin to aid in character creation. It's gonna have to come in bits and pieces, because I don't have time to sit down and do it all at once. I would note: while you know this information, your character might not depending on what sort of character you are creating. So keep that in mind when playing your characters.

Basic Geography of Greater Thractin

Thractin is a temperate planet with fairly wide ranging geography. It has two major continents and a number of island chains. The larger of the two continents takes up the majority of a hemisphere. Being so large, it contains a large variety of terrains including: mountains, large forests, jungles, tundras, deserts, swamps, inland seas, etc.

The smaller of the two continents is located in the middle south of the northern hemisphere opposite the larger continent. Think a shrunken North America vs Eurasia. The smaller island continent is about 300 km north-south and around 200 km east-west in size. It has several large islands, and countless smaller ones surrounding it. It has a large mountain chain running north-south down its center, surrounded by foot hills. There are a number of large forests, several swamps, and a number of rivers. There are large swatches of land not taken up by any of the above that are largely farmed. It has four major towns -- with a fifth on one of the larger islands. The towns are, in order of size: Telan, Dirn, Prim, Trame, Van Toes. Aside from those towns there are a large of small villages.

History of Kelzar's Island

Kelzar's Island is not an island all but is in fact that smaller of the two continents on Thractin. Around Three decades ago a scout working for the Black Sun corporation discovered the planet of Thractin and, rather than report it to his superiors in the corporation, decided to set up shop for himself there. He managed to trick the corrupt planetary government of the time into selling him the entire continent for some small pieces of technology.

Having bought the island Kelzar set about building a space port, inn and casino there. No one's really sure how a lowly Black Sun scout acquired the funds to do so, but some how he managed it. Initially the town of Telan was simply the Shylock Casino, the Shylock Inn, some prefab living areas and the full service space port with room for about 10 medium transport sized craft to land. Since then the town -- and Fringe haven known as Kelzar's Island -- have grown exponentially. Another four towns sprang up, founded by those who'd lost their ships in the casino and couldn't get another birth. Dirn was the first, some 250 km north of Telan. Followed by Prin, around 100 km east of Dirn. Next was Trame a further 20 km south east of Prin. Finally Van Toes on one of the small islands only a few km off the east coast of Kelzar's Island.

The native inhabitants of Kelzar's Island, forgotten about or ignored by their corrupted government that sold Kelzar the island, have largely remained ignored around Telan. However, in Dirn, Prin, and Trame the towns survive by adapting space level technology such as repulsor lifts to suit the needs of these local farmers. There are a number of small native villages -- which usually consisting of a bar, town hall, inn, gas station, one room school house, grocery store and a number of small homes -- scattered about the island.

In theory, the Shylock organization which Kelzar founded, runs the whole island. In actuality they concentrate on Telan and largely ignore the other towns that have sprung up and the small villages of the locals. Kelzar himself has long since been killed and supplanted by one of his former thugs by the name of Behar Nozan. Nozan has been running the Shylock organization for the last 17 years or so.

The Starport of Telan

Telan was the original star port founded by Kelzar. Originally it was little more than a small but full service space port, capable of housing 10 medium or light transports, the Shylock Inn and Casino and a number of prefabricated dwellings. It has since grown quite a bit. It is a popular port of call for anyone looking to avoid the Imperial government, as the Empire has no presence on Thractin -- or knowledge of it as far as anyone knows.

The town grew rather haphazardly around the space port and there is no particular organizational structure to it. In the south west of town there is a large maze-like slum of prefabricated living quarters occupied mostly by the down and out who lost everything at the Shylock Casino and settled down on the planet to find what work they could. Spread through out the city are a number of shops and bars. The shops sell anything one might wish to find and the bars cater to anyone and everyone.

Shortly before Behar Nozan usurped control of the Shylock organization from Kelzar, back when he was Kelzar's right hand man, he had a massive new landing field constructed south of city. The small space port was being overwhelmed and could no longer handle the traffic. The landing field is minimum service -- little more than a paved tarmac on which a ship may be parked. These days it is rather expensive to buy a birth in the full service section of the original space port. The daily traffic of the port has climbed quite a bit since Telan's founding and it now sees a daily traffic of anywhere from 10 to 50 ships coming and going.
