Back in the mid 90's I found an interesting tidbit on the web that involved "spicing" up damage events when a PC or an NPC rolled a mishap when resisting damage. I don't recall all of it but basically if you rolled a 1 on the wild die, the following could apply:

During ranged combat, Roll 1D

1. Head shot. Blast enters eye and exits back of skull. Killed

2. Headshot, temple. Character falls prone and is mortally wounded. The character will bleed to death after 1D rounds unless treated.

3. Arm severed (roll 1D to determine which. Even #'s are for the left arm, odd #'s are for right). Player falls prone and proceeds to "wounded twice" if not previously wounded.

4. Torso shot, digestive organs ruptured. Character is wounded. After 2D rounds, the character will begin to suffer 3D poison damage each round until stabilized.

5. Groin shredded. Character is "wounded" and falls prone for 1D rounds. Move reduced by half.

6. Leg blown off (roll 1D to determine which. Even #'s are for the left leg, odd #'s are for right). Player falls prone and proceeds to "wounded twice" if not previously wounded. Character is forced to crawl, reducing move to one quarter.

This was the gist of it. Sorry about the graphic nature of it, but we found it useful back in the day.Do any of you have any modifications/creative additions?

How about rolling 3D thus having 18 different selections? Twisted Evil

Now that I think of it, there were several more, meaning that multiple dice were rolled. Not all of them were fatal, and they had some interesting consequences.....hmmm. Mabey we should brainstorm some more!

One of the better gms i have played under had a whole 'hit location and effect' chart for each wound level.

EG. leg - stun. D6 roll of 1, graze of ankle, -1d from movement related rolls for 2 rounds, takes over from the -1d for being stuned. 2 - skin wound. No effect added in.
Arm - wounded. D6 roll 1 - hand hit, cannot use hand for 2d6 hrs.

and so on..

I really like the thing with the complication = critical hit

Here is something I brewed up.
It needs some fine tuning:

RESISTING DAMAGE COMPLICATIONS

Original damage:
Wounded: roll 1D
Wounded twice: roll 2D
Incapacitated: roll 3D
Mortally wounded: roll 4D

1-2: Hand is hit and is useless for 1D days. Drop what you are holding.
3-4: Leg strike. You fall down.
5-6: A piece of equipment is also hit and destroyed.
7-8: Arm hit. Anything you were holding flies across the room.
9-10: Leg hurt. Half movement until healed.
11-12: Headshot! Knocked out 1D rounds.
13-14: Violent blow to the hip. Legs useless until healed.
15: Shoulder hit. Arm useless until healed.
16: Heavy bleeding. First aid within 2D rounds or lose another health level.
17: Guts hit. Must be operated within 2D days or die.
18: Face disfigured. Not nice!
19: Hand is hit and crippled or severed.
20: Arm is hit and crippled or severed.
21: Leg is hit and crippled. Can only limp.
22: Eye is hit and destroyed (-2 to appropriate skills).
23: Lost hearing on one ear (-2 to appropriate skills).
24: Hip destroyed! Legs useless.

Face Disfigured. Not nice!

LOL I love that one, Gollum! I remembered some of the following and added a few:

Ranged combat criticals continued (rolling 3D):

7. Voice box. Character is "wounded" and unable to speak.

8. Cranium ruptured, goo spills out. Character is killed.

9. Upper torso. Subtract 1D from attackers damage roll.

10. Jaw blown off. Character is incapacitated.

11. Gastrointestinal ignition! Character falls prone and is wounded twice from internal burning. Roll 1D. 1-4 nothing else happens, 5-6, the character's clothing catches fire causeing 4D damage per round until extinguished.

12. Face blown off. Character is incapacitated and very very disfigured.

13. Lumbar spine region severed. Player is wounded and unable to move his legs until medically treated.

14. Jugular artery ruptured. Character is 'wounded" but will fall unconsious and bleed to death in 1D rounds.

15. Gut shot, organs spill out. Character is "mortally wounded" and will die in 2D rounds until treated. Characters using "First Aid" to treat this person have their difficulty increased one level.

16. Balance point, upperbody. Roll normal damage. The character is sent spiraling through the air, suffering 2D falling damage upon hitting the ground.

17. Balance point, hips. Roll normal damage. The characters legs are shot out from underneath. The character slams face first into the ground suffering 3D falling damage and a mouth full of dirt.

18. Gastrointestinal explosion! Initially having some bad gas before the fight, the charater's methane emissions internally catch fire, exloding with a hollow "Pop!" The blast flings flaming bits of organs and boiling stomach juice at a radius of 3 meters. Those within range suffer -1D to all actions for a round. The character is killed.

thanks PoorGM. Let us know how it works out for you. Here's the whole thing unsplit by posts. Mabey others could add to it like Gollum!

------Critical Damage on a Mishap------
If a PC or NPC rolls a 1 on the wild die while resistsing damage during "Ranged Combat", a Critical Mishap occurs. Roll 3D:

7. Voice box incinerated. Character is "wounded" and unable to speak.

8. Cranium ruptured, goo spills out. Character is killed.

9. Upper torso. Subtract 1D from attackers damage roll.

10. Jaw blown off. Character is incapacitated.

11. Gastrointestinal ignition! Character falls prone and is wounded twice from internal burning. Roll 1D. 1-4 nothing else happens, 5-6, the character's clothing catches fire causeing 4D damage per round until extinguished.

12. Face blown off. Character is incapacitated and very very disfigured.

Simple, every other result will involve either a hand or arm being cut off.

Overall, these crit charts remind me of Rolemaster...

Very true, however...a little flare adds some more spice to the damage results! Like instead of getting cut in half, they could end up getting sliced in half "vertically!" Ewww... Shocked Shocked

Ah yes, the everpopular "goo."

I laughed out loud when I read that...

Hmm... someones going to have to explain the ones involving 'gastrointestinal'. Exactly how do these happen....
And as a side note... they sound really painful.

And its "lite" system spin-off MERP. Now those were real crit tables.

Hell yeah. WEG Star Wars and MERP were the first two RPG's I ever played. We spent hours just leafing through the crit charts, laughing our asses off.

Heh heh, the gastrointestinal hits....

I just assumed that since a blaster bolt is pretty hot, a gut shot with a bout of bad flatus wouldn't be a very good thing. I mean, imagine the amount of wallop a Gammorean could pack after a 6 hour Kessel Bean binge!

With a gut that size, a precise blaster bolt could act like a grenade!
Or their innards could just internally catch fire...
