Adventure Idea - Win a Starship Contest

I had some time to kill so I thought I would post something I GM'd quite a while ago. I think this would work really well if the characters in your campaign need a ship. I used it as a way to start out and introduce the characters to each other.

Basically, the characters caught wind of a contest on Bespin that was being organized to give away a starship to promote a new tourist attraction on Cloud City. The contest consisted of two parts.

First, the characters had to navigate their way through a maze, running into various obstacles (pits, water filled trenches, etc) or each other along the way. Also, there was various equipment that could be found as 'prizes' along the way. Each character was equipped with magnetic boots and a stun blaster. When hit with the blaster, their boots would lock down and they would not be able to move for a predetermined amount of time.

Whoever gets to the ship first, has to fire it up and then fly to the finish line. Those characters that follow will have different ships (perhaps cloud cars) to chase down the leader with low power weapons. Ultimately, the winner gets to keep the ship.

The best part of the race when I ran it was the character that was in second place arrived at the ship just as the boarding ramp was being raised. Thinking quickly, the character jumped towards the boarding ramp, stunning himself in midair. His magnetic boots locked down onto the ramp just before it closed. He then stunned the contestant already on board and won the race.

I like it - I think I'll steal it. I was planning a similar "great race" idea in my current campaign setting, but the prize wasn't anything as clever or motivating as a ship.

Yeah, that's a very nice concept that can be easily adapted and tweaked to suit one's tastes. I might use a variation of it in the future, thanks.
