Taking the dealt cards, Sammel looks at his hand. He gives a toothy grin, "Hide and seek huh? I never was that good at hiding, but I always seemed to know where someone was going to look." He lets out a soft chuckle, "As I got older, my 'sixth sense' helped me get good at cards and that helped me get by when I came to the 'big city.' I ended up winning so often that I came to the attention of the Ashla. Once I found out why I was so good at reading people, and why I won at cards so often, I decided that I wanted to learn more about my 'gift.' The rest is pretty self explanatory."

As the pair continues playing cards, Sammel makes a point of winning just a little more than half of their games.

"As some kind of premonition or foresight? Or can you, like, read minds of others?" Aaron was obviously intrigued. Having someone with us that can actually read minds, that would be an incredible advantage... but also dangerous. I would have to pay attention to what I think.

"Just surface thoughts," Sammel reassures Aaron, "Growing up, I did it without realizing what I was doing." He gives an emberrassed shrug, "Now I'm a lot more careful with it. I try to avoid using it when I dont need to, and make a point of not using it on people I know unless its important or I have prior permission."

"That's reassuring... not that I have to hide anything". Aaron tries to put on a mischievous smile. "But how do you decide, if something is important? Where do you draw the line?"

Sammel's smile becomes wistful, "Thats simple. I just ask myself: 'does this serve the greater good, is it self preservation, or does it help someone important to me?' If it dosnt meet one of those conditions, I probably shouldnt be doing it." Sammel takes the deck of cards and shuffles, taking a turn dealing, his movements are fluid as the cards are dealt. Setting the undealt cards to one side, he scoops up the cards in front of himself and prepares to play another hand.

Aaron thinks about Sammel's words while pickung up the new cards in front of him. "Well, sounds good enough for me." He smiles shortly again, then discards some cards from his hand.

Sammel finishes playing the current hand of cards before talking again, "So, you mentioned that you are good at hide and seek. Is that tied to your 'gift,' or is it a more mundane talent?"

Despite his throwing a few hands, Sammel's games of sabacc with Aaron could have easily resulted in an average of simple victories. Aaron finds himself playing at a moderate skill, which is remarkable for any beginner but Sammel consistently predicts and selects his cards with a heroic proficiency. He is clearly well beyond the skill of anyone short of a professional gambler to beat in a serious game.

He is however a good sport, both characters are highly intuitive, polite and gentlemanly, they are very easy to get along with naturally and have a similar eye for details. Sammel is more of a smooth talker, he has a way with setting people at ease. Aaron has the same talent for it, but is simply less experienced in this particular area.

The tall, broad human Ashla at the end of the table glances at the two over his meal (long/tied dark hair, armoured robes), shovelling a spoonfull into his mouth and taking a long sköll of his drink.
"A Scout and a Bureacrat," he snorts, thickly accented. Galactic-basic is not his first language, unlike most humans.
"Every team needs its cannon fodder."

Malka, the crewman perks up. "Cannon fodder...Thorn says I'm a great cannon fodder!" he blurts, ignorantly pleased with the title, obviously unaware of its meaning.
Jenra grins. "You are terrific cannon cannon fodder," she giggles.
"The best," Captain Vale chuckles, taking a draught of his coffee.

The beefy Ashla puts his Link-armoured elbows onto the table and rests his square jaw on two thick wrists, levelling a stare towards Sammel which is all of a little unnerving. Sammel is acutely aware that whilst he can feel the Force strongly, he has thus far learned no Control and his defences in any kind of duel through the Force, even in a training environment are no better than a man on the street.

"Try to read my thoughts, Bureacrat."

Aaron has to grin because of Malka's remark of being 'great cannon fodder', but immediately scolds himself mentaly for doing that. It's not nice to mock the simple minded, he reminds himself.
"You shoudn't be that proud of that title, Malka".

Immediately, he turns his attention to the other Ashla, trying to figure out if he's just in a bad mood or if he has something against him or Sammel.

"How about an introduction first? My name is Aaron Marr, and you are...?". As with Sammel, he holds out his hand to greet the unfamiliar Ashla.

{OOC: I corrected the horribly misspelled "figure"}

Sammel takes a long, deep breath, one in every group, he thinks to himself. He sets his cards down on the table before standing and moving towards the man who just spoke. He waits for Aaron to introduce himself before stepping up to offer his own hand, "Well my new friend, even though I'm a people person, my gift makes me an exceptional spotter and lookout for people like you."

Once he has shaken the man's hand, he steps back slightly and produces two throwing knives (Pick Pocket 5D+1 to do so without being noticed.) "But I expect that we can handle ourselves better than you expect," With a visible flourish, he returns both knives to their homes. "We're all friends here," (Persuasion 6D) "We'd do well to work together and learn to take advantage of each other's strengths." He gives the man a friendly smile, "Think of us as strands in a rope. Each of us may be strong on our own, but together we can do much more." After the short speech, he reaches out with the Force to read the other man's surface thoughts (Sense 4D. Receptive Telepathy.)

Crew Specialist Jenra and the Medic Berias appear visibly concerned that a fight could break out among Ashla on board the starship...a scenario which is completely out of their depth. Captain Vale appears less surprised.

Vale nods towards the intimidating Ashla, "You're from the mountain enclave aren't you? Battle-knights...that don't play well with others. Was the government expecting trouble on this mission of yours, or...planning for it?"

Sammel does find a slight uneasiness in approaching the outspoken Ashla battle knight so closely, he does have an intimidating attitude that leaves Sammel unsure if he might converse or draw a weapon himself and duel. But his motor skill and persuasion are superb and he has the blades in his hands easily, yet inoffensively as he smiles and speaks maturely, despite remaining sure footed and ready for any eventuality.

Something happens when Sammel reaches through the Force to receive the battle-knight's surface thoughts: there is nothing there. Nothing, no resistance and yet no sentient thoughts exist to read. It is as if the man simply did not exist to the Force, although you can see him with your eyes.

At this point the battle-knight vanishes from Aaron's sight. Completely. One moment he was there and the next he simply disappeared from his Force-vision. He can still hear his voice when he begins speaking again, but can no longer see him.

The battle knight grins as Sammel tries to read his thoughts.
"Something wrong?" he muses.

Aaron is visibly startled. He has never seen - or rather not seen - someone like that, who could simply block the force at will, just like that. He waits to see how Sammel reacts, since he's more eloquent and chooses his words better then Aaron. The last thing he want's is that they really have to fight.

The Captain said 'Battle-knights' and 'from the mountain enclave'... Aaron tries to remember what he knows about them.

{OOC: Knowledge 2D if he can know anything about them}[/i]

In spite of himself, Sammel finds a broad smile blossoming on his face, "Neat trick. You just became the most interesting person in the room," He gestures to include everyone else in the room, "No offence,"

"How do you shield your mind like that?", (Sense 4D, Sense Force Potential. He is doing this to try getting a better feel for who/what he is dealing with.) He pauses, sizing the man up and seeing if he can learn anything more about the man through his appearance, "Usually I can feel some resistance if someone is blocking me, but with you, its like probing a rock, there simply isnt anything there." Sammel glances back at his cards over on the next table, then sets down across from the other man, "I'd love to learn more about your gift, and about you."

{OOC - been making lots of rolls here, lol}

Aaron considers his knowledge of the Ashla Philosophies, trying to recall if he has ever heard or seen anything of this power in his studies. His only conclusion, due to an incomprehensive schooling thus far, is that it is something he might expect from a Master but not another student. Perhaps the battle-knights of the mountain enclaves are taught differently to other Ashla enclaves, that seems plausible.

Sammel again reaches out with the Force, this time tapping at the target's connection to the Force, which should give him a backlash proportionate with the strength of the target's connection, like a magnetic repulsion that could send him flying backwards across the room.

But startlingly, again no effect. Nothing. Not even the slightest repulsion and there really should be. If this Ashla is a Force user at all or even Force sensitive, there is no way to tell through use of the Force. Sammel starts to wonder if he would even show up using Life Detection.

Sammel is moderately aware of all things to his normal senses down to the finest details within the room, from the rhythmic breathing of its occupants (Jenra seems nervous about the situation, Aaron is staring wistfully at the ceiling and obviously thinking about his training or studies about this), to the chairs and galley in his peripheral vision, and of course fine details about the person sitting before him. So he does in fact notice something unusual, something easily missed.

When Sammel tries to reach towards the intimidating Ashla using the Force, an expensive looking amulet around his neck, resting upon the chestplate of his armour seems to gather an incandescant glow, hardly noticeable to the untrained eye. Some alien scrip etched upon it faintly faintly glows a slightly different shade.

{OOC - Aaron is not aware of this amulet, as in it does not particularly stand out to him at this stage "in-character"}

The battle-knight smiles as if he just won a game of sabacc.
"Mazael is my name. And yes, I'm from the mountain enclave."
