Practically speaking, cargo is more economically shipped aboard vessels specifically designed to transport cargo. Warships like the Venator and the Acclamator are far more expensive to operate than a commercial vessel with similar cargo capacity. However, they are uniquely suited to carry small craft / troops / cargo into combat situations. As such, I primarily see the Acclamators serving as troops transports (as originally designed) or as fast replenishment ships for Imperial Navy Superiority task forces (keeping Star Destroyers and their escorts stocked with supplies as needed). Venators, in turn, would be used as superiority ships (ala the Victory II) with an emphasis on space combat, but without the massed wings of starfighters they're capable of carrying, due to the Empire's shift in doctrine.

I could see the Venator being stated as more fragile than the Victory-class (especially with the wide-open spaces of the hangar bay), and thus even more likely to be deployed in out-of-the-way, low threat areas.

After thinking more about it I could also see old Venator's being converted to serve the roles of a mothership for exploring/surveying solar systems, or espionage/long range observation intelligence gathering.

Filling the roles of the Modular Taskforce Cruiser's Survey and Observation Modules before the Imperial Navy had commissioned the construction of Modular Taskforce Cruisers.

Maybe early on, but I'm betting the Taskforce Cruiser was developed as part of the First Wave of ships I mentioned above, even though we didn't see stats for it until Dark Empire. It fits well with the Empire's doctrine of uniformity in their military equipment: a single class of ship that can be whatever it needs to be depending on circumstances.

One thing the Venator does do is eliminate any need for a carrier-variant of the Victory-Class. I've seen a few versions of this over the years, but nothing even approaching the capacity of the Venator.

I do see the Venator being much more attractive to the Alliance than the Empire, with their greater emphasis on starfighter combat, although their relative lack of resources might make it difficult to get a Venator up to full complement with -Wing series starfighters, it does leave room for a lot of other useful ships: U-Wings, spec ops freighters, blast boats, etc.

Here's what I'm thinking as far as what ships are available during what time period.
    Clone Wars-Era
    -CC7700 Interdiction Frigate*
    -CC9600 Attack Frigate*
    -Carrack-Class Light (Pursuit) Cruiser
    -Caravel-Class Light (Scout) Cruiser*
    -Dreadnaught-Class Heavy Cruiser
    -Delta-Class Troop Transport*
    -Acclamator I & II-Class Assault Transport*
    -Venator-Class Star Destroyer*
    -Victory I-Class Star Destroyer
    -Arquitens-Class Light Cruiser (Corvette, really)*
    -Corellian Corvette

    Imperial First Wave
    -Imperial I-Class Star Destroyer
    -Victory II-Class Star Destroyer
    -Vindicator-Class Heavy Cruiser*
    -Interdictor-Class Heavy Cruiser
    -Strike-Class Medium Cruiser
    -Ecliptic-Class Star Frigate*
    -Tagge-Class Modular Taskforce Cruiser

    Imperial Second Wave
    -Super-Class Star Destroyer
    -Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer
    -Nebulon B-Class Escort Frigate
    -Imperial Escort Carrier
    -Lancer-Class Frigate
    -Imperial Assault Transport*
    -Raider I & II-Class Corvette*
    -Star Galleon
    -Torpedo Sphere

*indicates ships that exist in non-WEG EU material, or are mentioned / theorized in WEG material, but not given stats.

Any thoughts as to ships I've missed, or ships that should be recategorized?

Wait I just remembered seeing this picture

Venator's can land on a planetary surface.

So if you are scrapping these ships and retiring them from the Imperial Navy, These ships can be landed somewhere and BAM!

Instant Imperial Garrison.

Put along trade routes it can discourage piracy, smuggling, and rebel activities. The fighters can be replaced over time with TIEs and blastboats

It's got enough ground troops, gunships, and walkers that it would require a major commitment of rebel forces to attack.

Best of all with the shifting tides of war the ship can take off and relocate depending on the needs of the Moff as trouble heats up in other areas.

Sorry for getting focused on the Venator. I'll drop it now.

The Venator is a nice ship though so its understandable some one would get focused on it.

Also: HEY ! Port Side-to-Side !
