I was watching ANH (had it on in the background), and not for the first time, the Rebel Naval Helmets caught my eye.
I like 'em. I think that they're cool looking. But, I was wondering about their functionality.
If you notice in the pic below, some of them have what looks like a shade visor that can be pulled down. Some of them don't.
Upon closer inspection, I realized that the shade part could not be pulled down in any practical way. And, we never see any of the troopers with that part slid down over the face and eyes.
It looks like it was not made to slide down as a face shield at all. So...what is it? Some kind of panel that covers forward facing sensors in the helm?
I assumed the ear box with antenna is a comm unit. But, it could be something else. Maybe a tone is heard when the blaster is leveled at a target, assisting targeting.
Thoughts? |

Maybe it IS a face shield, but it doesn't slide.
Perhaps it detaches and can be re-clipped into place.
The location on the helmet shown is where it is stored for convenience, as opposed to a pocket or something.
Pure conjecture on my part. |

I did find this shot, but it's of a prop. I don't know how reliable it is as I've never seen the helmet in a Star Wars film with the visor down like this.
But, hey, maybe that's all it is--a visor. |

This costume guide says that it's a visor.

Just a thought: Maybe the unique design of the helmet is for atmospheric work? The shape doesn't matter in space, so Naval troopers where them for protection, for communication, and, when in an atmosphere, for their aerodynamic shapes, shunting the flow of air down the back and not ripping the helmet off by the force of the wind while on a speeder! |

But looking at how flimsy they are, what sort of protection would they really give? _________________ Confucious sayeth, don't wash cat while drunk! |

Flimsy? My man, those are made of nutropolydenseiconic fiber! Spun by the arachnids of Ferran IV in the Dergan system!

the Ceremonial Guards at the door Han and Luke Enter at the end of the movie have their visors in the down position. I had a prop helmet back when I had this costume and the visor could be rotated down or let in the up position. _________________ http://www.boomspeed.com/reaperden/ErcID.jpg |
