I once built a PC droid exactly like a PC: 18d in attributes, 7d in skills. The player would have to come up with a really good explanation for stats over 4d and also got a few simple attachments at no extra cost (in place of normal equipment).

PC droids face quite a few significant disadvantages: being "goods", being prone to a memory wipe (which equals character death) when captured, being limited in what skills to raise with experience points (only those that have at least 1d over the attribute in them), etc... I think they deserve a little break... Wink

I'd have to say he listed the big two - Memory wipes and being a "good" (slave) are much bigger issues. Being a good is a daily issue the droid has constantly, every adventure. Memory wipes, while rare, are detrimental to the character. And while the group might never intentionaly wipe the droid's memory, it can happen if the droid is near lots of ion damage. (Can we say space combat?)

On a semi-positive note, if you use one of the standard templates, the beggining skills are typically considered "hard wired" into the droid. So they don't become useless, but the character's personality does disapear. You can see from C3P0 though that the droid has inherinet quirks and dispositions.....he was wiped and was practicly the same droid as before (minus the memories). Although we don't know how long it took him to get back to his good ol' self. So there is kinda an up side. (To the massive down side.)

There is a basic default personalty that is hard wired into the droid. But that is very bland as there are no personality quirks and the default personality would be the same for virtually all droids of that particular make.

The default personality is the same for all droids of a particular make & model; but that does not mean that the personality is bland or devoid of personality quirks. It really depends on the creator of the droid's personality matrix, either they design a rather simple, basic, and bland personality matrix; or they lovingly slave over creating a more complex personality matrix. Fantastic Tech: Droids lists under each droid if the Personality matrix is: None, Simple, Elementry, Advanced, or Complex.

For pre-existing quirks, look at the R5 - it comes predispositioned to being bitter, grumpy, ect. The designer cut corners on that droid's personality matrix, and the droid is predispositioned to those traits. The only way they don't become a problem is regular maintance and frequent memory wipes so those quirks don't become "active" elements of the personality.

The V6's base personality panics in combat situations. (It's a pilot droid.....that should be a red flag to most PC's buying a V6.)

The C4LR Litigation droid is pre-programmed to be honest. It is prevented from "lying, exaggerating, or misrepresenting". It's allegance is to the law.

So you are right about some droids having bland quirk free personalities, but others have complex, lively, or quirked personalities strait off the line.

I, personally, have always felt that Droids as PCs in a Star Wars game start off with too many handicaps, and not enough bonuses to offset those. I feel the droid rules are seriously unbalanced, and limitting, forcing the droid PC to play a significantly less capable, far more specialized, restricted advancement, money vaccum of a character. It really takes all the fun out of playing droids.

Good point. And if they did get a memory wipe, any of those CPs they spent to upgrade things, would be lost, unless those upgrades were hard wired...
