Comlinks, an interesting topic. I do believe that standard ranges should be very unreliable. Certainly on a planet there are atmospheric conditions to worry about. Certain air masses pass signals more readily than others. Indeed sometimes with the right conditions at atmosphere boundaries you can even get some energy reflected back down for even greater signal transmission. I can only imagine the same is true for certan spacial phenomena, especially for hyperspace transponders. I also allow heavy modifications in antenna shape or transciever power to add different benefits. More modifications to include encrypted transmissions. Comlinks are fun! Good thing my PCs have a communications officer on their ship, even if it's just a kid. Smile

"We used these all the time in Africa. Very reliable, and will have more than enough range." "The thing is. There aren't that many hills in the Desert, nor is it as wet." - Barely remembered line from "A Bridge Too Far".

And Farley Mowat got a signal from Northern Canada (Literally in the Artic Circle!) all the way to... Spain I believe. 'Course, IIRC, he was trying to get Ottawa.
