Okay...I realize this is gonna make me look like a noob, but I've never seen the "500 CP" thing before. I've seen "18 Attribute dice and 7 skill dice" (or however many skill dice the GM wanted to issue). How the heck to you divvy up 500 CPs when creating a character?
Sorry for this, but like I've said, I've never seen this before. I'm confused. |

So you start with your 18D attributes as normal.
then you spent CPs to improve skills (which are all at 0)
so dex=3D
blaster=6D means you have to spend 36 CP to get that.
so on and so fourth. _________________ The Vong have Arrived

How would you handle species that get bonus dice for expenditures, like the Duros who get 2D for their first D dropped into starship skills? _________________ RR

I'd guess that you "Pay" for the 1D at standard cost, but add 2D to the skill. |

Essentially the rule is your first 1D placed into the skill is at 1/2 cost... so id rule you have to spend 1/2 the CP... but both ways could work just as easily. _________________ The Vong have Arrived

Is there any advantage or particular reason to doing skills in this fashion, rather than simply having the 7D (or however many Skill Dice the GM wants to give)? |

It dosnt have a big impact on things, but it does do a little to regulate the overall power of the character. If you plan to boost your stats to 7D, you are going to burn through your CPs pretty fast. On the other hand, if you plan to buy a wide range of skills, you can get more Skill Dice out of it because lower level skills cost a considerably less. In other words, spending CPs allows you to choose whether you want a focused character or a skill monkey, or something in between. |

Isn't that kinda complicated? And fairly expensive as well? |

Yes, but this method does give you the option. |

Interesting.
I don't remember the cost off the top of my head; however, since this is being done at character creation, does that then negate the player having to roll to see if the attempt is successful? In other words, do they get to simply count it as a given? |

That might make it worth it. I've never upped an Attribute. What's it cost? I know it's a lot... |
