For you Star Wars fans out there, the original Grendadier Miniatures (now OOP) from the 90's are still my favorite. This was the series produced specifically for the WEG Star Wars RPG and the corresponding WEG Star Wars Miniatures Battles.

The Miniatures Battles rules state that you need 1" bases, but I find 1" to be a bit large for storage, transportation, and use during RPG sessions. Additionally, I figured it'd be great to have a means to ID the minis during Miniatures Battles sessions (Which squad are they on, which is the squad leader, etc.)

My solution was to magnetize the bases, and then make swapable bases:

Very cool, TheDoctor! Do you end up painting them too?

Yep...working on that now!

The Grendadier minis have a lot of detail, so it's a challenge painting them in a way that accentuates all the details of the sculpt.

Doing two squads now (18 total). I'll eventually have a full platoon (36 soldiers + 1 NCO, +1 Officer)

1" bases do seem a bit bit for 25mm models.

I've uses pennies in the past.

Although, truth be told, all my old star wars minaitures are still on their oval original bases.

Found the smaller bases fit better on terrain and vehicles

I was surprised to find out how many cool plastic mini-figures already exist for Star Wars. I spent this last weekend at Emerald City Comicon, and one vendor had numerous containers filled with hundreds of various aliens, Rebels, etc.

Anybody ever use any of these?

I have a handful of the plastics, but prefer metal minis wherever I can get them.

But at least the plastics are durable (don't have to handle them with kid gloves), come pre-painted (albeit not as good as I can paint the metals), and have a broader variety including prequel era figures.

Yeah, they'd sure be useful as a tool that don't take quite as long to prepare.

These ones I saw were reasonably priced, too. There was a bigger box with one for $1, and another with some for $2.
