I've only played in one game that's done this, and even then it was not quite as elaborate as the full Battle of Endor. Still, it was with this game (D6), and each player (of which there were 12-15!) would control either a capital ship (and the crew within in) or their own vessel or starfighter (often with a wingman, plus gunners).

So we're talking multiple squadrons, and this GM is really, really good (especially at seat-of-your pants stuff).

You're right, though, that it's a lot harder to capture the "feel" with a pen and paper game. One year the markers on a large map were brightly colored war planes, which (for me, anyway) doesn't really help capture the feel. It was amazing watching him factor in everything from people's rolls to the various tactics, all while coordinating so many ships.

The million credit question then, is was it fun?

Hypothetically, it seems like it would be awesome to have a giant battle full of 100s if ships. How did the reality pan out though?

What I was thinking could definitely cover the scenario you mentioned. What I had been thinking however was more of a standard game scenario, maybe with the players in one ship, or a squadron, fighting their own oponents one-on-one with full RAW rules, then the GM uses this quick-dice shorthand to simulate the rest of the battle between turns. In this way, the players are part of a "live" battle with actual outcomes and casualties, that us neither made up by the GM. ("the imperials win, because that's what I wrote), nor meticulously simulated.

Think of it this way - your PC's game is happening inside a giant game of Risk.

Actually, that's a pretty close description.

The game I got to play in was fun (very fun), which is part of why it drew so many players. On the flip side, having that many players made it drag on incredibly long each time, to the wee hours of the night.

I really like the idea you've expressed, which would be far easier to implement (for any GM) and sounds like it would be a great amount of fun. The only thing close to it I've seen in a RPG is some "mass combat" rules a few times, but those were made for medieval-type ground battles.

Wow. Tre has an awesome voice. Him talking is like spreading warm honey on silk. But don't wear the silk afterward. Because that sounds sticky and uncomfortable.

I liked the discussion about the GM types, whether original or premade, I think most everyone starts out as a premade GM using the published adventures, and then it comes down to the GM's comfort level with the rules, and overall experience level of the GM whether they ultimately progress into being an original GM.

I remember when I first started as a GM, it was with the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay game, and I started out with the premade adventures to get things moving, but I rapidly moved onto my own original material, sometimes including snippets from published, sometimes all original, and it was some of the best times my players and I had... Since I was creating things on the fly it was almost easier to react to the unexpected from the players, whereas I've played in some games with premade/published material with other GMs and things have stalled when the players throw a curve ball.

From there I came into the SWD6 universe, as well as other games like Cyberpunk, Aliens, Twilight 2000 among others, always tending to be the GM because I was one purchasing most of the books...

Great days, man, great days... Smile And great comments on the podcast too!

Also, I'd love to hear a 'raw' recording, kind of a real podcast with the blooper reel thrown in! Really, what you guys do rocks!
