The heart of the film, in my estimation, is when Yoda talks to Luke just after calling down lightning to destroy the ancient Jedi texts: He says the best teacher is failure.

That's amazing, if you think about it. Ever had a dream that you never reached? Maybe you found solace along another, more important path. Or, maybe you learn that it is truly never too late.

I dig that.

Never say die.

Another comment as I watch the film again: Anyone else notice how few weapons are being fired at the Resistance Dreadnought from Snoke's flagship? Wouldn't you expect a torrential rain of turbo laser fire coming from that thing?

Just finished it, on DVD, for the first time since I saw it in theaters.

I liked the film when I first saw it.

Then, I started to have doubts.

Now, I like it again. It's a good film. Could have been great. Remains at good. It blows the heck out of any of the prequels, and I like it better than Return of the Jedi.

We've gone from Republic, in the prequels, to Rebels in the original trilogy, to Resistance in TFA and this film. And now, we're Rebels again.

I'm in.

Did anyone else feel a hint of a Rey/Ben Solo love story?

Think Abrams will turn it on its ear and go that route?

I doubt they'll do anything romantic, but it's impossible not to notice the strong connection between the two characters. It makes sense. I see them as mirror images of each other.

The State of the Galaxy During The Last Jedi

CHECK THIS OUT.

That's a two-page spread from TLJ Visual Dictionary describing the state of the galaxy during the time of the film. Some notes...

-- Many systems were already leaning towards the First Order before the start of either TFA or TLJ. When the Hosnian system disappeared (in TFA), several major worlds sided with the FO within days.

-- The strike at Hosnian prime was so devastating because the entire New Republic government was destroyed in one stroke. Plus, the New Republic reduced its fleet after its success against the Empire as it tried to emulate the Old Republic (which had no formal forces, outside of the Jedi, before AotC). That fleet was destroyed as the entire Hosnian system evaporated after the use of the Starkiller weapon. All the leaders and politicians, all the governors, all the troops and generals and admirals, all the ships....gone. So, the galaxy was left with little faith in the New Republic in the face of the awesome First Order might.

-- The New Republic never took root on a scale comparable to the Old Republic.

-- The main goal of the Resistance was to spur the New Republic Senate into action against the First Order. This, of course, is no longer possible. At the end of TLJ, the Resistance becomes the Rebellion...a new Rebellion.

-- Canto Bight is in the Corporate Sector! That's a nice nod to the old Brian Daley Han Solo adventures. I thought that "Canto Bight" was the name of the world, but that is "Cantonica". I thought those casino guards reminded me of Expos. The sea on Cantonica is artificial!

Yeah, Starkiller Base firing on Hosnian Prime decapitated the New Republic government, leading to the New Republic's Darkest Hour and the Resistance's leadership getting decapitated when Kylo Ren and his wingmen destroyed the bridge of the Raddus led to the Resistance's Darkest Hour. It's no wonder that when Leia sent the distress call from Crait that no one responded. The whole galaxy had passed the Despair Event Horizon by then.

Yup, Cantonica is in the Corporate Sector, which is quite a ways away from Crait. TLJ confirms that you can travel the breadth of the galaxy in hours, not days or weeks/months as per WEG/SWD6. But then again, the sequel trilogy has upended alot of the SWD6 universe that we thought we knew. I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about that.

I've always thought this, and I don't think it conflicts with WEG/SWD6. It's been clear to me for a long time that hyperspace is about time, not distance, and time is dependent on information and obstacles.

I've always played where a longer route could be traveled much more quickly than a shorter route with lots of obstacles. I use the freeway analogy. Let's say that you've got a straight line shot to your destination, straight through downtown, lights and traffic and all.

Or, you could take the freeway that loops around downtown, is at least double--probably three times--the distance, and get there much quicker because you never have to stop.

That would complicate the theory that Rey and Kylo are split-soul reincarnations of Anakin/Vader. That would be rather narcissistic, even for Anakin.

If you get the movie through Movies Anywhere, you get the full soundtrack. I mean the FULL SCORE of the final theatrical film playing by itself as you watch the movie. That’s very, very cool. I would love that for SW77. Unfortunately I am not so excited about it for TLJ because… TLJ.

I added TLJ Digital to my Movies Anywhere collection. Unfortunately the score-only version of the film doesn't have subtitles as an option, but it is still nice to have. I'll probably use it to listen to the theatrical score without watching it before I get around to actually watching that version of the movie.

The cool thing about Movies Anywhere is that it has a feature to add your movies from other digital collections and put them all in one place (Paramount and Lionsgate movies are still hold-outs for this feature). I now have 28 movies in my Movies Anywhere profile. It even has a feature to add profiles that remove Rated R and Unrated films so I added a profile for my son (and I already advised him which PG-13 movies are off limits).

The scene where Hodo pilots the ship alone...

I studied it last night. She really doesn't pilot the ship. What she does is crank on the drive (we see the nozzles flair), use maneuvering thrusters to turn the ship to align it, and hits the hyperspace level to make the jump.

So...I'm thinking that really doesn't break the idea that ships require lots of crew to operate.

For those who weren't aware, Bruno Ganz, the actor who played Hitler in the film Downfall and all the subsequent Hitler Reacts videos, passed away recently. So, in his memory, here is Hitler Reacts to The Last Jedi. Warning: Some profanity in the subtitles.

It is not the intent of this post to start a TLJ flame war; that has been done and done again. It's just here for a quick laugh and to commemorate the passing of a meme icon.
