Star Trek led to Star Wars, which led to Star Trek being more awesome (ILM!), which made everyone want more Star Wars and eventually everyone was happy. Well, for a while... Laughing

At our Imperious Leader(TM)'s suggestion, here is a thread for all things Trek. We might have had one before, but this one is shiny and new!

I'm a bit odd in that I rank my series preferences by the series doctor. So without further ado, here's my list:
  1. Star Trek (or TOS to you who don't recall when the only captain was Kirk)
  2. Voyager. Robert Picardo killed it. A very close second to McCoy.
  3. Next Gen. Crusher never had much screen time, but she owned what little she did get.
  4. DS9 Bashir is just fun! Oh, and he could completely destroy the station if he wanted, but that's another story.
  5. Enterprise. I never really liked Phlox. The character was ok, but he never really gelled with me.

I haven't watched Discovery and probably won't until it's on a platform that I'm already paying for.

The floodgates are now open. 8)

Hmmm... While I really liked the Doctor on Voyager I felt he was one of very few redeeming qualities about the series - overall I really hated Voyager. I did not care for Enterprise at first, but after setting aside a few issues with timeline a watching a few of the more conflict oriented episodes it did grow on me. I have no feelings either way about DS9...I'll watch it if nothing better to do presents itself.

I grew up on the original. For that it will always have a special place in my heart - and a select few episodes I still love. I much prefer4ed the Movie Era of the Kirk timeline, for look, feel, and my two favorite stories Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country.

Of them all thought, The Next Generation was my favorite. It first aired my freshman year in high school and I followed it until it ended. I liked most of the characters to some extent, with my favorites being Classic early appearances of Q, Data, and Lt. Barclay. It was one of the first long running full TV series I sought ought on DVD, right after Babylon 5.

In these past years I have been getting immense enjoyment out of Star Trek Online, and at the same time wishing there were something like it on Xbox for Star Wars.

I am an unabashed, dyed-in-the-wool, completely unapologetic Niner. After all, how can a series whose resident starship is fan-nicknamed Ben Sisko's Muthaf*king Pimp Hand not be awesome? Laughing 8)

I like most of the other series. TNG took a year or two to really hit its stride, but then one could say that of DS9 and perhaps the other series as well. TOS is the yardstick by which we measure all the other series. Voyager had its ups and downs but was meh in alot of places (and we do not speak of Threshold). Enterprise was meh to the point where I lost interest after the third season and never bothered to watch the fourth season; the "Temporal Cold War" just turned me off as I really hate the time travel plot device (I think I've mentioned this in previous posts, so forgive me if I sound like a broken record here). I haven't bothered with Discovery yet as I was planning to watch it on DVD, but I'm told that it introduced a bunch of retcons and/or contradictory new elements such as holographic communication a full century before it was invented during DS9. And Spock has a foster sister now? Where'd she come from? Ugh, whatever. Maybe I'll watch Discovery once it gets on DVD, but not before then.

But yeah, I remember the days where DS9 and Babylon 5 were Dueling Shows and I had to choose DS9 over Babylon 5, but I found out Babylon 5 was an amazing show after watching it on DVD. I highly recommend both shows.

Maybe I'm just sheltered but I never heard that one. It's accurate, though!

Maybe we need a B5 thread too...It's a travesty that Warner Brothers lets that outstanding property languish. Thankfully it's on Prime now so new fans are experiencing the greatness of Mr. Straczynski's universe.

Yes, the success of Star Wars lead to Trek movies, and the success of those lead to TNG which lead to the rest of the franchise. On a Trek movie commentary (II, III, IV or VI - I don't remember which one), Nimoy gave props to George Lucas for Star Wars because without it, Trek would never have made the switch from TV to movies. We would have instead gotten Star Trek: Phase II (TV series of a subsequent five-year mission) without Spock (replaced by a younger Vulcan knock-off). Riker and Troi from TNG were based on the original TV versions of Decker and Ilia, and Phase II may have killed the Trek franchise, so we may not have gotten TNG in any form or any other Trek series without Star Wars. Anyway, after Nimoy praised Lucas, Shatner was uncharacteristically completely silent because he hates Star Wars with a passion. It's really sad since Lucas was old drinking buddies with Shatner back during the production of TOS. And it's ingrateful because Shatner is literally a millionaire as a result of Star Wars' popularity.

I'm only on DS9 season 3 but the Defiant is definitely a big improvement to the show so far.

I'm curious what your timeline issues were. Did you notice that in the Seasons 4 opener where they completely resolved the Temporal Cold War, part of the resolution was that the temporal war never even happened in the first place? The resolution to the temporal war that kicked off ENT season 4 completely erased certain episodes from the timeline and may have altered others. What exactly the new timeline was wasn't specified because they completely moved on from it after that, never referring to it again. It is not even clear what the Enterprise characters remember from the temporal war. But it allows for a lot of discrepancies to be easily resolved, paving the way for the series to mend itself back with the rest of the franchise in Season 4...

Sutehp wrote:

The temporal war was an interesting concept but horribly executed. But I overall enjoyed the Xindi superweapon story of ENT season 3 much more than seasons 1 and 2. It is a still unique entire season story arc - Discover has come the closest with half-season story arcs. It was an offshoot of the temporal war, but far superior to the rest of the temporal war. If you could have made it through aliens taking over Nazi Germany in the ENT season 4 opener, then you would have seen the complete and utter resolution of the temporal war, and then the best season of the series.

In Season 4, the producers took many fan criticisms of the show to heart and delivered what I call "the prequel season" which made great strides towards lining things up with TOS and the rest of the franchise. They revealed why the ENT Vulcans seemed to be different from the Vulcans of the rest of the franchise (the Romulans had infiltrated Vulcan leadership in a way but no one but the Romulans and the viewers knew that). We see the origin story of how the Vulcans become the Vulcans of the rest of the franchise. And to maintain continuity with the TOS introduction of the Romulans, no one ever saw a Romulan - They had a drone ship in one arc. We saw the evolution of an Earthlings-Vulcans-Andorians-Tellerites alliance that would later lead to the formation for the Federation after the Earth-Romulan War. ENT s4 explains why some Klingons look like humans in the TOS era and why they then all go back to the bumpy-headed franchise standard since 1979. There is a time-travel sequel to "The Tholian Web" that is also a prequel to "Mirror, Mirror".

Enterprise isn't my favorite overall Trek series, but ENT Season 4 (even with a few dud episodes) is one of my two fave single seasons of all Trek series. It was a tribute to TOS in some ways, exactly what everyone expected and wanted from a prequel series. If ENT had gone on to a fifth season, it would have gone into the Earth-Romulan War. I wrote a "thesis" of sorts on time travel in Star Trek that also defined the timelines of Enterprise.

I don't know how to tell you this, but I think you're in the wrong franchise. About every 4th Trek episode is a time travel episode! OK, not really that often, but there are a lot of time travel TV episodes in Trek. And several of the movies.

I wasn't aware of the holographic communication thing (but maybe I haven't gotten to it yet in DS9). Where Spock's human foster sister came from is detailed on the show because she is the primary protagonist (As a baby or small child she was orphaned in a Klingon attack and adopted by Spock's human mother). And Spock's foster sister makes a helluva lot more sense than Spock having a fully Vulcan half-brother who renounces logic and get suckered into a cult! But Sybok has never been referred to on Discovery (or ever again in the entire franchise after TFF) so, plot hole? 8)

After AotC, the prequel bashers cited the fact that Threepio having lived on the Lars farm created a plot hole with ANH. But Threepio had different coverings back then. Maybe a lot of his model have the same voice and go by the same nickname of "Threepio" (Artoo is an R2-unit so he is probably not the only "Artoo" in the galaxy). So Owen and Beru might not have had any reason to think it just happened to be the same protocol droid that Shmi brought with her and Anakin took from them (Owen was probably annoyed by Threepio and happy to see him leave). After I told the bashers all that, they countered with "But shouldn't Threepio remember being there? He didn't even know which planet he was on in ANH. Plot hole!" The very last line of dialogue in RotS explained that Threepio's memory was wiped at the end of the Clone Wars. Simple. No plot hole.

Look, here's the thing for Star Trek. A lot of ENT-bashers were the same way for ENT until season 4 resolved virtually all discrepancies of the first three seasons with future continuity. Prequels are retcons (retroactive continuity). The series isn't over yet so it can't' be judged on contradictory new elements yet. It is possible these seeming contradictions will all be accounted for and explained by the time the series is over. So when the series is complete and you watch the entire series, then you can determine if each contradictory element is accounted for and how effective the resolutions are in your opinion.

And then there's the other consideration - Will you even care? While I revelled in how much ENT s4 supported TOS and the rest of the franchise, I am having quite the opposite good reaction to Discovery. It is such a good show on its own right that I find that I just don't care about the rest of the franchise while I'm watching it. For all I care, it is another alternate reality to the prime universe, like the current Trek film series is. The rest of the franchise existed without Discovery, so if I have to 'quarantine' Discovery to its own universe in the Trek multiverse, then the prime universe remains the same as it was before the show and Discovery is still as good as it is on its own. I love it. Discovery s1 is my other top single season of any Trek series. I can't judge the series as a whole until it is complete, but if it stays as good as it has been so far, it could very well become my favorite Trek series of them all.

I'm not sure if you wanted to wait until the entire series is out to watch the DVDs, but FYI for everyone, Discovery s1 is already available on DVD and digital download. Also, the entire first season is still viewable (stream on demand) on CBS All Access, so if you have time to binge it in one week, you can watch the entire first season for free during the one-week free trial of CBS All Access. If a week is not quite enough, then you can have the free trial week plus pay for one month (less than $10), and then watch the entire season and cancel. I cancelled my CBS subscription after I finished season one and will re-subscribe when the first half of seasons 2 is done to then go through it in one month, then cancel again until the second half of the season is done, and so on.

Discovery truly goes where no Trek has gone before. The first half-season arc is about a war with the Klingons, and the second half-season arc is about the Mirror Universe. I highly recommend it!

I never realy got into the original series, but loved the films. TNG was my favorite trek, followed by Voyager (loved paris and B'lanna), with DS9 pulling up the rear.

The history of my Trek fandom...

I never saw a single episode of Trek until after I started junior high. The Star Wars Trilogy was done. There were three Trek movies at that point but I hadn't seen them. Then at the start of a mid-80s summer, I just happened to catch a Star Trek episode on a channel that showed it in daily syndication. I have no memory of which episode it was, but I was intrigued. I went to my local library the next day and learned there were 79 episodes. The next day I began a log were I recorded the date, the episode name and stardate given for each episode and 80 days later I confirmed I had watched the entire series. When I returned to school in the fall I befriended a guy whose family had a VHS player and tapes of the first three movies, so I saw them. I quickly fell into the roll of the biggest Star Trek nerd in school.

I eventually got my own copies of the first three films on tape. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home was my first Star Trek in the theater, and I loved it despite it having a minimum of action. Despite my much stronger Star Wars fandom, this movie still holds my record of number of times I have seen a movie in theater: 17 times! And what a feel good ending - Kirk returned to Captaining, Spock resolved his Vulcan-Human conflict, and a new Enterprise!

I was excited for TNG but had a job in high school that made me miss TNG so a friend taped every episode all the way until Skin of Evil where he accidentally recorded Wheel of Fortune instead due to a VCR programming error. I was mad that I missed the episode where Tasha Yar died so stopped watching the show, but soon after that we had Session Zero for my first WEG Star Wars campaign which started in early June.

I also got my own copies of the Star Wars Trilogy and it moved back into the top franchise in my heart spot again. I caught episodes of TNG sporadically over the years. I hated TFF and was so disappointed, but I kept going with the film series into college and thankfully TUC was much better. I watched the DS9 pilot in college and it was meh so I didn't continue with watching it. After college I watched the entire first season of Voyager but lost interest in continuing. After the first three TNG movies were good, but Nemesis sucked. I completely missed Enterprise, even while having a roommate during its last two seasons who watched it (the same childhood friend who taped TNG for me).

Then sometime after Enterprise (and Lucas' SW films series) ended in 2005, I started getting more back into Star Trek. I re-watched TOS and watched the entire series of TNG and Enterprise, making note of my fave episodes. I bought the movies I like, my fave TOS episodes, my favorite ENT episodes from season 1-3, and the entire ENT s4. And then I loved the alternate reality movies and Discovery (so far).

There is also the old FASA Star Trek RPG out there, that goes into a lot of universe-building detail, even about things rarely touched on in the series. There's an entire sourcebook on the Orions, for example.

Oh yeah, I remember having the old Federation/Romulan/Klingon starship catalogs for the old FASA game. I lost those books years ago but at least I was able to find them again in PDF form. Some of those designs were awesome looking.

The Star Trek Adventures RPG from Modiphius looks amazing.

Really love TNG. I like a lot of episodes of DS9. Voyager was something I loved when it was in broadcast, but I like it a lot less when comparing it side-by-side to some of the other iterations. But I think I could watch TNG on repeat for the rest of my life.

Funny enough, what I'm really enjoying right now is Star Trek: Outpost. It's a fan production -- a kind of podcast radio production -- but it's got a great setting and interesting adversaries. It takes 5-7 episodes for "Riker to grow his beard" so to speak. The first few episodes commit a few storytelling sins, but they get over it and move on to some really great audio production.

https://giantgnome.com/our-shows/audio-drama/star-trek-outpost/

It's a fan production so the acting isn't up to Paramount standards, but still good stories.
