I don't know whether to laugh or not at this..
My name is david. I currently have 1 david in the group, a 2nd on the way, and a 3rd who says he'd like to join, next month.. So that's making 4 'daves' in a group of 9 players and 1 DM..
Has anyone had something similar?

With so many Davids in your group, I have a protip, just in case. If you guys ever hear a mechanical voice that sounds suspiciously like HAL 9000 saying something along the lines of "What are you doing, David?"...run.

I ran an entire Star Wars campaign with two players named Jim. We avoided confusion by just calling all the players by their character names whenever the game was in session. As GM or player, I don't remember other duplicate names in a game group outside of maybe a few single adventures here and there. I'm pretty sure there has never been more than two people in the same game session with the same first name. David is a common name but four in a group of 10 does seem to defy the odds.
Last names, well I've had multiple groups with siblings. I had one group with two brothers and their cousin, so that was three with the same last name.

I had 2 cousins that played in a number of RPGs I ran.
They both had the same first and surname. (The legal first names were different; but they went by the same diminutive, ie Charles = Chuck and Chuckie=Chuck.)
The group developed a nickname for each.
The older one was called 'bald-chuck' because the rest of us were a lot younger and he was balding.
The other we called 'Super-chuck' because he was incredibly athletic and my brother coined the name when he saw him leap completely over the game table, width-wise from a standing position. (he was in the back corner around the packed table and had to get out to use the bathroom. Instead of getting everyone to get up , he just jumped over to the other side. (!!) ) |

I kinda feel bad for Bald-Chuck because that is opposed to Super-Chuck. Not only is he bald, but he is not super.
On both sides of my family (from Ohio and Texas), it is an unspoken rule that no one ever names their child the same first name as one of their first or second cousins (even if a different last name). Any older cousin names are considered "taken". My dad is a "Jr." named after his father. My dad's brother in Australia had a boy on the way at the same time I was in utero. My brother called my dad and asked him if he was going to name me "... III" after their father. My dad asked my mom. My mom said no, but compromised by having my middle name be my dad's (and his father's) first name. My dad told my uncle I would not be the third, and when my cousin was born, he was named the third, thus being named after his uncle (my dad) and our grandfather. So the sequence of Sr.-Jr.-III is not linear, but the "III" is the only one in our generation with that first name, and I have an original first name in both families.
My wife and I both have very big families, and I named my son a common name in general because somehow quite miraculously it was an unused first name in all of our families (of any generation). At the hospital I was kinda irked when a clerical worker responded to my son's name with, "Oh, is that a family name?" as if that were the only reason I would name my son that. I was so happy that I was free to name my son my first choice for first name, after the historical figure he is named after, with no cousins or even second cousins with the same name. And I'm thankful for my wife not vetoing it. Our son is her father's sixth grandchild and none of the first five were named after him in any way, so our son's middle name is her dad's middle name. Our son shares a last name with my dad and me and that is good enough for me since I got my first choice for his first name. And so far, after 7 years combined of preschool and elementary school, my son has never had another kid in his class with the same first name. He did have one boy in his scouts den with the same name, but that's it. I have no regrets.
