I think West End games was smart not to specify what speed the particular space transport was traveling when the benchmarks were set. It is the purview of the game master to assign a speed that those benchmarks conform to. That speed can be space 1, space 6, space 12, or space 20 for that matter. Essentially the game master sets the speed limit, West End Games simply gave us a loose guideline by design. By doing this, they can satisfy softer and harder levels of science fiction. Consensus is like herding cats with this community. Smile

I would posit the term “hyperspace” was popularized by Leigh Brackett in her science fiction works, the term “light speed” was utilized by George Lucas. Considering George Lucas was a bit of a hot rodder the term “light speed” has been popularized by our community as slang. Smile

I love when I am reading something that is relevant to the current discussion. I just finished "Ambush at Corellia" and noticed this:

Quote:
"You clearly have no flair at all for the dramatic," Lando said as he stood up. Tendra smiled broadly as she got out of her chair. "Try me some other time," she said. "I might change your mind." Luke got up as well, and the three of them went out into the cool and pleasant night. The squad of Selonian police came up to them immediately, and did not waste any time in pleasantries.
"Calrissian? Skywalker?" the paunchiest of them demanded.
"That's right," Lando said. "What can we do for you officers?"
"You can get off our planet," the head cop said, smiling unpleasantly and displaying her full set of extremely sharp teeth. "Visas canceled. You've got six hours to get off the planet, and eighteen to get clear of the system. Got it?"
"Yes indeed," Lando said, struggling to keep his voice smooth and genteel. These were the sort of cops he hated the worst. "We get it. And we were just going, in any event. Good evening to you, officers," he said.
Chapter 13, Page 263

Considering how tight Thracken Sal Solo was keeping the events of the book going and the information he had, I would assume they knew the sublight speed of the Lady Luck and the fact Lando would be back to communicate from Sarcophagus the moon of Sacorria with his Radionics.

I don’t mind those sublight benchmarks — in fact, they actually help me explain the very clearly visible effect of planets rapidly approaching or receding relative to the spaceship as wee see it in the movies: flight of the fighters from Yavin to the Death Star. Or the surprise attack at Endor when fleet came out of hyperspace far from the Endor and approached it in seconds.

Of course, these speeds aren’t used during direct combat — dogfights, fleet battles — because… well, it would simply mean instant failure in terms of piloting skill — Heroic +1000? (At those speeds, effective maneuvering is just impossible.) It’s like trying to use the full power of a Formula 1 engine to race through the narrow streets of Rome.
Basically you see the same in Star Trek - direct combat is like aerial combat of present - at slow speeds to make a show. Not like in "Forever War" or "Expanse".

As for hyperspace and the multiplier, I break it down into drive types:

Military/customized (super-fast travel: Republic fleet to Geonosis, Rebels and the Death Star plans to Scarif, etc.) — up to a few hours (1–5)

Transport — up to a dozen hours/ day maybe.

Civilian — up to a few days (AotC – Anakin and Padmé were asleep during their trip to Naboo, same as Jar Jar on the flight from Tatooine to Coruscant).

And then apply the astogration modifications.
