Agreed on that being a great way to get a person into the game, if you have the time/chance...

...And if you don't have the time to do it before your game, it is possible to have your experienced players rolling up characters or working out some issues for the campaign (whether new ones or loose ends from last session) while you pull the newbie to the side and give him some pointers during that bit of time. A little time spent coaching a new player can shave minutes (if not hours) off a session that could be better spent playing.

I have found that when time is prescious and you are unable to do a full "solo" adventure for a new player, it can be handy to take a moment in the storry when the regular adventure permits (prior to the introduction of the character) to introduce him in-context. I usually start with a glimpse at the new character's ordinary life as he is wandering about tending to day to day affairs. I have a situation or two where he needs to make some dice rolls (like arguing with the Liscense Bureau over his Speederbike permit [Bueracracy roll], etc...). Then, I will inevitably find a way to introduce him to a plot thread that will lead him and the other PCs together (perhaps a villain fleeing from the PCs steals his Speeder, after all that trouble clearing up the permits...). I try to keep it fast, dynamic, and iteresting, introducing each new element of the game a player will use most as it becomes important. I have had good experiences with this method.
