I prefer using templates, but i also have 10 of my own, ranging from former corellian security officer, to pre space merc to ships doctor...

AS to the pip thing...

Lets say you wish your character's attributes (you are making up your own template) to look like

D 3d+1
K 2d+2
M 2d
P 3d
S 3d
T 3d+2
That would be a total of 2d+2d+3d+3d+3d+3d=16d, then add up the pips.. 1 +2 +2 equals 1d+2 extra. So you would be shy one pip.

For making templates, i usualy go with 2d for # of skills for tech.know and dex. 1d for per and mech and 1d-2 for str. And if you are using a template, you cannot 'add in' a skill it does not start with, you have to learn that in game.
