9D is still a lot of dice. Imagine raising all skills to 9D, just to get around the training control measure.

I'm sure that if that started to become a problem, we'd come up with something else...

But, as I said, only two characters have anywhere near 9D... Both of whom use the skill all the time anyhow to prevent the need for constant training.

All skills atrophy with disuse... Even some NPCs have it mentioned in their stats... So it would with PCs. They'd never loose everything ENTIRELY, or any time soon, but still...

Oh... And... "665, Neighbour Of The Beast" - Max Payne

Another very simple way of limiting skill advancement is too keep to the RPG's suggestions for how many character points to award per mission - and not starting with extra attribute and skill dice. This combined with the idea that characters can (dare I say it?) be killed, has proven to be enough to prevent outrageous skill levels in our campaign.

Dare, Dare.
Thats the ultimate control method.
Your character has virtualy become a god, oups bigger god and your dead.
Too bad about losing that character that could have whipped Vader with one hand tied behind his back.
Oh well, lets start over. Twisted Evil 8)

My character "Capt. Jack" met a God once, Hell...

I don't know why my GM just shook his head when Capt. Jack asked "How's it hangin'?". He's never showed any more respect to anything else...

And for those paying attention, yes, this was after Capt. Jack was on his medication... Otherwise he might have gotten in even more trouble.

But, honestly folks, how often do you see >9D skills?

A more subtle method is the 'Hero's Death'. In one game we had a soldier perish in hand to hand with stormtroopers that overran the team's position (Their orders were hold at all costs). His response "Now, THAT's how to lose a character. With your enemy piled at your feet - worthy of a song."

The director gave a graphic description of how the team's delay had allowed the Rebel command staff to escape.

Actually, it's easy to get a specialty skill up to 9D. Half the time it takes to get a normal skill that high.

Especially when one of your attributes... Lets say Strength is at 7d... Then it becomes really easy... in fact if that is the cast then you can start a character with oh I don't know 10d in ummm... lets say brawl specialisations.

Of course those players are generally special cases

And if the player really exagerated I found out how much fun it could be to catch an incurable disease that reduced many attributes by two or more levels or even worse killed the character slowly and painfully Twisted Evil 8)

Volar...that is one of the best death scenes I have heard of in a long time.

Very cool, very SW. 8)
