I just wrote a complete set of rules for using missiles / torpedoes as fire and forget weapons. This obviously took some time, and unfortunately I forgot to copy it before hitting 'post'. This is easily done when your head is full of space ranges, balancing issues and 'fun' issues.

During this time I got logged out! Evil or Very Mad

This is not the first time.

This forum has the shortest 'log out' time I have ever encountered. Can you please increase this. I dont know exactly what the time is, but writing long posts or posts where you have to think and redo obviously can not be managed during this time.

I'm usually logged into Rancorpit for an indefinite amount of time. Also, when I switch on the browser in the morning I usually am automatically logged onto the forums. Perhaps it's something to do with your cookies or wookiees or something? Accidental erasure during the session maybe?

Yep, only time I get logged out is when I clear my personal info/cookies from my browser.

Funny, I think I get logged out after an hour or so of 'inactivity' (ie, typing is considered inactivity as long as I dont finish a post).

Ill double check the 'keep me checked in box', usually I always have it checked.

Also check your browser security settings.

Chances are the problems you're having are on your end rather than server-side.

The timeout is set to one hour of inactivity. Due to how the software works, typing in a window is unfortunately considered inactivity. Clicking the Preview button while you're composing a long message is one way to reset the one-hour timer and help avoid timeouts.

A couple easy ways around the problem if you remember to do so. First, if possible have it open in two pages or tabs. One is the main page/tab that you're typing in, the other is just for checking things, like if you've timed out. If you use the second page/tab to check on things while you're still typing from time to time you'll remain active. And if you go too long on inactive, the second page/tab can be used to log back in without loosing your work.

Second, and really the wiser move even if you do the above, highlight everything you've typed if you've been typing for a while and copy it. Then try posting. If you've timed out then just re-enter your name and password and repost, pasting what you copied.

When I've remembered to do either or both of these they have saved me a lot of headaches when it comes to timing out after a long period of typing.

Yeah, I stay logged in also. I never get logged out, but for those that do, Loc's idea of periodically hitting the preview button once or twice every hour is a good idea.

Sometimes, when I have a really long post, I actually type it up in a word document, easier to check spelling and grammar that way, then just copy and paste. Post is up lickity split.

Yup, in any long post, or a forum that updates rapidly, I write my posts in Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac), update the thread to check for new posts, and then copy/paste my post into the forum (edit if needed). Never have to worry about any losses, unless you have a serious computer problem.

As I find my post is getting longer and longer, and time is going on and on, I copy/paste out of the browser and into Notepad/TextEdit... or right before I hit submit, I simply copy the post to the clipboard. If there's an error, I refresh, paste it back in and go again.

Really, you only lose a couple big posts before you start taking safeguards Wink
