How do you handle droids talking binary?

Can humans/aliens understand it?
Does it require a language rolle or perhaps a droid repair/programming roll?

I seem to remember Luke talking to R2D2, but I dont know if it is common to be able to understand binary.

i would rule its transmitted TOO fast for human ears to even distinguish the 0s from the 1s, let alone decode that into understandable text.

If you listen to R2 youll notice that its 'voice' go up and down depending on wether we are supposed to understand if its a positive or negative reply. I assume Luke can gather the general idea from r2s 'pronunciation' as well..

that isint binary, that is a droid imitating sounds of a human to try to convey meaning.

Yeah, the only people who can probably understand binary I would rule would be Jedi using translation power, or someone who specializes in binary. Other than that you'd need a protocol droid to translate.

And I think the translation power has quite a high difficulty for droid languages. I'm not sure if it would allow for the understanding of a compressed burst of sound that constitutes an entire blueprint but it should work for a screen of text.

I'd disagree on someone who specialized in binary. Simply, organic beings (other than a couple rather machine-minded (usually insectile) species) can't understand binary. Only translating droids and the power of myth.. er, the Force, can handle binary.

Ive gone with the idea of conveying a vague concept of what's being said, general meaning rather than any kind of detail... and a general meaning that can easily be misunderstood at that.

I would say the translation power would not work, because you cannot sense the brain of the being who made the speach (droid making a binary speach)

and droid speek is accelerated to 100s of times the speed of normal slow communication, so the ear/brain cant even understand it. if a droid were toslow down and go "0100010110110100011011001001101010" then i MIGHT rule you could understand him... but this would take 10-20 times the amount of time to SAY, instead of just transmit

EG:
Hello = "0110100001100101011011000110110001101111" in binary (using ascii as the standard, which is for computers now a days.)

now imagine each 0 = "boop" or low pitch sound and each 1 ="beep" or high ptich sound (good analagy would be actually read out zero one on zero... on how long it would take to say.

I'd have to disagree with your disagreement, part of standard computer hardware tech training is learning to read and write binary. It's a standardized language, and I'm sure even more so in such a tech driven universe.

Hmm, I guess there is no easy answer to this. I think ill rule that for most persons it is only possible to interpret “yes” and “no” answers, but insect aliens can understand binary with a successful heroic languages or droid programming/repair roll (we have a skilled verpine in our group so it is possible).

heh, not really (yes, im disagreeing iwth your disagreement of the disagreement). you dont learn to READ binary, you learn to understand what it means (eg powers of 2) but not to read it in text. you learn to understand the numbers, but 99.9999999999% of the time you are NOT looking at binary.

*shrug*
Seems like the answer is pretty simple to me. See Vong's responses Razz

well, first convert them into octects of 8

then decode them (the first one is 71, second one is 39, third one is 109)

and then have memorized the ascii codes (I,',m)

and then decode all THAT into sentences (I'm)

Now do that all in your head, without writing it down....

now do it at 1000 letters per second.

converting those 3 lettters by hand took about a minute (i did have to look up ascii, because NO one memorizes ascii tables)

so as long as you are sending out numbers at about 1 every 4 seconds, and i have a pad of paper on me.. then i can convert it as you say it.

but not at 8000 numbers per second.
