To you old players

I remember the first edition with fondness...it was simple and fun...in a sentence or two can you tell me what changes where made for 2nd edition and do they improve or hinder the playing of the game...

I know there are other threads about 'what is your favourate' but now the only way to play the game is to buy used. It is as easy to get one as the other and I don't know which route to go...Seems I need alot of books to play first edition

Rebel Alliance Sourcebook
The Star Wars Rules Companion

are all these books really not needed to play 2nd edition - the 2nd edition book is only 176 pages...err how is that possible...
