I hope this isn't frowned upon, but I have the world to thank for the PDF books people release on the net. I know downloading scanned books is actually illegal, but these books have been off the print for a long time, WEG does not hold the license anymore and this kind of used books is nowhere to be found in Brazil, where I live.

If it weren't for these PDFs, my group would have been eternally stuck with simply the 2nd Edition R&E Rulebook and Gamemaster Screen, the only items we managed to find around here before WEG went under. But for a couple of year now I've managed to download and print a multitude of WEG sourcebooks and adventures that really helped our adventures a lot.

I was wondering is you guys use these PDFs as well, and if any of you is actually responsible for some of those scans. Also I'd like to find out if there's any other scanned book out there that I haven't discovered. I've been using e-mule, and so far I've managed to download:

2nd Edition Rulebook
2nd Edition Gamemaster Screen
2nd Edition R&E Rulebook
2nd Edition R&E Gamemaster Screen
Cracken's Rebel Field Guide
Creatures of the Galaxy
Cynabar's Fantastic Technology - Droids
Dark Empire Sourcebook
Death Star Technical Companion
Galadinium's Fantastic Technology
Galaxy Guide 1 - A New Hope
Galaxy Guide 4 - Alien Races
Galaxy Guide 5 - Return of the Jedi
Galaxy Guide 6 - Tramp Freighters
Galaxy Guide 7 - Mos Eisley
Goroth, Slave of the Empire
Gundark's Fantastic Technology - Personal Gear
Han Solo and the Corporate Sector Sourcebook
Imperial Sourcebook
Lords of the Expanse Boxed Set
Pirates & Privateers
Platt's Smugglers Guide
Rebel Alliance Sourcebook
Rules of Engagement - The Rebel SpecForce Handbook
Tales of the Jedi Companion
The Jedi Academy Sourcebook
The Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook

ADVENTURES:
Battle for the Golden Sun
Black Ice
Otherspace
Scavenger Hunt
Strike Force Shantipole
Tatooine Manhunt
Adventure Journal - The Best of Issues 1-4
Classic Adventures - Vol II
Introductory Adventure Game
The DarkStryder Campaign - The Kathol Rift

Lastly, I would like to thank wholeheartedly whoever is responsible for these excellent scans, and encourage them to keep scanning!! There are still some great books I want to get my hands on.

I've been DLing them myself (Strictly for back-up purposes, our books are getting beat up.).

I was able to find a bunch of items at GenCon as well (But that's not available to everyone here, I understand.), but those won't last forever, either.

Is it actually illegal to PDF a book which is no longer in print from a company which no longer holds copyright?

Is there a statute of limitations for such things? I don't know. Can anyone quote a law?

I can't quote a law, but the Copyright is still held, but by another company. As they can point to a "Loss In Sales Due To Illegal Copies" of their current product, I doubt that it's "Legal" in the true sense.

If it's anything, it's probably one of those "Grey Areas" where there's no precident.

Or it might not, I don't know.

As I said before, download e-mule and start searching, you can quickly find most of the books I listed.

Has anyone seen any book that's not on my list on the net?

Most of these books are still obtainable in the USA, or from e-Bay. If anyone wants to post a list of what they want, I'm willing to look around for them.

What is e-mule?

BTW, I'm not sure that it's illegal to obtain an electronic copy of the book so long as you have legitimately obtained a hard copy of the book as well. It's like making a copy of your CD's so the orriginal doesn't get damaged.

e-mule is a file-sharing program, in the likes of Napster, Morpheus or Kazaa. However e-mule is not filled with so many mp3 files, while it has lot of programs and documents available, such as PDFs, ZIPs and RARs.

It can be downloaded here for free:
http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1&rm=download

I don't know how legal or not this is, but frankly, I don't really care. All I know is that if it weren't for these PDFs, my groups would have nothing in the way of sourcebooks, and thanks to them we now have a beautiful collection. Maybe some e-bay guy didn't get to sell his book to me, but I'm sure EPSON made a lot of money on my account, printing books at home is NOT cheap!

So, how is emule in the way of viruses? Is it another sespool, or have the things you've gotten from there pretty clean?

Never got a virus from e-mule, not that I know of. And I've downloaded a respectable amount of gigabites from them, so I consider it pretty safe.

Oh boy, I was just checking a complete list of WEG products and there are still some 20 books I would LOVE to own.... It's unlikely I'll ever get them. C'mon people, keep scanning!

Just thought I'd let you know that, thanks to a guy I met at theForce.net Forums, I have now compiled a PDF of "Stock Ships" to share via e-mule. To anyone who relies on such files, be my guest!

Is there any other way of getting ahold of these PDFs besides eMule? I tried eMule this morning, but I'm on a college campus, and the only P2P program that we can get to work here is Ares, which only has d20 stuff.

I wish there was, but these are big files (ranging from 7 to 100mb). But if you find some way, I'll be glad to post my collection.

And by the way, with the help from the guy I mentioned above, i'v also already compiled PDFs of "Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments from the Rim" and "Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook". Currently scanning "The Star Wars Sourcebook: 2nd Edition".

I've been using DirectConnect, myself. I don't know how the collections differ between emule and that, but I know that I don't have GG9.

Lessee, stuff I've picked up off DC...

  • Best of Star Wars Adventure Journal 1-4
  • Cracken's Rebel Field Guide
  • Creatures of the Galaxy
  • Cynabar's Fantastic Technology - Droids
  • Dark Empire Sourcebook
  • Galaxy Guide 04 - Alien Races
  • Galaxy Guide 05 - Return of the Jedi
  • Galaxy Guide 06 - Tramp Freighters
  • Gundark's Fantastic Technology - Personal Gear
  • Han Solo and the Corporate Sector Sourcebook
  • Lords of the Expanse box set
  • Otherspace
  • Pirates and Privateers
  • Platt's Smuggler's Guide
  • Rebel Alliance Sourcebook
  • Rules of Engagement - The Rebel SpecForce Handbook
  • Star Wars 2nd Edition Revised & Expanded
  • Tales of the Jedi Companion
  • The Thrawn Trilogy Sourcebook

And I'm still trying to recreate my lost collection via ebay.
