I can not get away from movie characters saying they "can not" and rules that still allow a roll wth a fair chance of success.

I feel that there should be a noticable differnce in how hard even the most basic task is between a trained, untrained and a specialized character.

I have come with something that requires no more rolls, is not totally fool proof but works well enough.

I am increasing the base difficulties for all untrained skill rolls and redcing all skill rolls for specialized characters. Keeping the standard difficulty levels for trained characters.

Also Specialized Characters will have autmatic sucess (aka no need to roll) on a very easy task
this mostly becuse most specializations are in the 4D+ range .


In short

Untrained = Difficulty Number +2
Trained = Difficulty Number Normal
Specialized= Difficulty Number -1

So Untrained pilotig roll is MECHANICAL vs Difficulty+2

Trained is SKILL vs Difficulty +/-0

Specialized is SKILL vs Difficulty -2

Very Easy: 1-5
Easy: 6-10
Moderate: 11-15
Difficult: 16-20
very Difficult: 21-30
Heroic: 31+

For untrained individuals all tasks become harder, significntly so but you can still be lucky.

A specialized character imo will have a much easier time succeeding in basic skill related tasks compared to a non specilized or non trained individual

And I belive this will make the 2D Mechanical Senator actually "not be able" to pilot on a default roll unless he is very very lucky (wild dice)

On the flip side the specialist really does not fail at the basic tasks (at all)
and even the more advanced tasks he is still familiar enough with to have a good chance of sucess

If they are specialized are they not already gaining a ';increase' since A) they usually have a higher d code, and B) get a cost decrease?

Character's say this because of their insecurity or as a plot device (that and game designers give popular character's too high of stats.....but that is a different topic).

A task has it's difficulty based upon the task - not the person attempting it.

The chance a specific individual has at accomplishing the task - is based on the individual - (their skill and any other bonuses).

So your chance at accomplishing it may be more or less likely - based on your skill (i.e. it is less difficult to roll a 10 on 5 dice than to do it on 2).

It feels like mixing the difficulty of the task, with how challenging it is for a specific skilled character to complete it.

Not trying to be rude or contrarian - but I think what you are suggesting is already 100% built into the game.

Either that - or it is on me - and I totally 100% don't get what you are saying.

A movie is meant to be watched and a game to be played.
Two different things. Plus, imagine if your PC could never ever do anything, them the game would be terrible.
Don't compare the two.

Plus... Difficulty Numbers are already set within a range, so just go for the higher end of the range...

Well... A movie caractere saying "I can't do it" has to be read as he don't believe to success. But who know before trying ?

Not defaulting is anathema to the game system as designed. Not that you care.

Sometimes people post house rules based on a phantom premise without citation. Please cite every case in a Lucas SW film where a character said they couldn't do something, so I can then reply to each one. Thank you.
