This didn't age well. We caught a foot of snow yesterday. Someone was saying it's Redding's biggest snowfall in 50 years.

Wow! While I don't hate you, I find that it hard to sympathize (easy to empathize). This has been a brutal Winter here in Central Ohio, but I am trilled that today it is above freezing with no snow on the ground or precipitation. Which reminds me I need to walk the dog before my wife gets home.

The reference to the "Sanctuary Moon" was just a throwaway line by Palpatine in ROTJ. The stuff about it being an actual nature sanctuary is Legends, not canon.

I dunno, after the Battle of Endor was over (and especially after Threepio made his plea on behalf of the Rebels; the novelization gives this in much greater detail, especially when Wicket of all people gives a speech to the Ewok Elders that finally convinces them to help the Rebels), when we see all the Ewoks and the Rebels celebrating together, it certainly seems like they regard each other as sentient people.

So you make it a point to bring up that the moon of Endor being a nature preserve is only Legends, but then you refer to the Legends novelization? I think there's a flaw in your argument, counselor. LOL.

And Canon is not inherently superior to Legends. It's a Star Wars Multiverse. The game featured on this website is actually the primary foundation of the EU. Even FFG's current RPG is almost completely based on Legends, but it is officially "ambiguously canon".

And even in Canon, Palpatine called it "the Sanctuary Moon" for a reason, even if the reason has not been canonized yet. The nature preserve/prime directive explanation makes sense for any Star Wars universe. And it was the perfect place to build Death Star II - A forbidden moon in a restricted system known for navigational hazards and thus is avoided.

As you say. Cool

Yeah, I wonder why Lucas had Palpatine refer to Endor as "the sanctuary moon" in ROTJ. Did George even know what he meant when he wrote that? Did he specifically say as Word of God that Endor really was a nature preserve? Granted, that sort of minor detail isn't one that we'd expect to have a direct, explicit explanation in the movie, but it is true that the nature preserve explanation does make a certain amount of sense in that the Empire wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of an isolated star system to build a Death Star. After all, they did it before at Scarif (and got rid of all the evidence that they did the same thing at Geonosis).

The Sanctuary Moon is likely a vestige of earlier drafts of the screenplay in which it was originally called the Green Moon and it was in orbit around the capital planet (then called Had Abbadon, now Coruscant). Yes, the battle was originally going take place in the Imperial capital system. But the realities of early 80s special effects wouldn't really allow an adequate realization of the capital system, so it was moved to the outer rim where most of the prior films took place. A nature preserve moon really makes sense around an ecumenopolis with almost no nature left.

I can't remember exactly what the Making of RotJ said about "Sanctuary Moon" in the final shooting screenplay or the word of god about it. For some reason I feel skeptical that EU writers came up with that on their own, but I guess it is possible.

It still makes sense in the film as-is because Lucas probably reasoned that how else could the Ewoks could remain primitive in this galaxy with fantastic technology if galactic citizens had open access to the moon? Even Tusken Raiders had some technology like masks, guns, and moisture vaporators. And Palpatine wouldn't give a damn about preserving nature or non-interference in primitive cultures, so for him this would just be an exploitable system to serve his purposes.

I'm trying to imagine an army of Ewok lawyers saying "Objection!" but all I can see them saying is yelling "YUB YUB!" at the top of their lungs. With every single Ewok wearing a pin stripe suit.

It's actually a very terrifying image. Shocked

Even better: An Ewok lawyer using the Chewbacca defense while Threepio pantomimes for the jury.

Sir, you are stumbling into territory not even Chthullu and the rest of the Great Old Ones would ever dare venture. For the sake of the sanity of all the Universe's inhabitants, I suggest you turn away from your present course now. Shocked

There's a comedy series in this, I know it:

Roman J. Ewok, esq.
Ewok Mason
Matwok
Law & Ewok
Boston Ewok

Anyone good with Photoshop? This could go viral.

...Yup, you went there. We're all doomed. Shocked

I thought Matwok was especially funny, though. Laughing
