How unbalancing do you think it would be to make Initiative a skill? Most people default to perception, of course, but some with only a moderate perception could have high initiatives through skill training?

I’m almost certain this has already been topiced...

EDIT: Not quite, but close. Here.

I have initiative as a skill in my game.

I tie it to the maximum number of attacks as well.
Subtracting 10 from the total after each action.

So if you rolled a 25 for initiative, you take your first action on 25.
You would take a second action at 15.
A third action would go at 5.

Characters are free to choose multiple actions or single actions as MAPs still applies.

This ties in with my ruling on dodge as each dodge makes you lose a die off your next initiative roll. So if you dodge several times, you may not have an initiative to roll the next round....pinned down by fire.

I use an Awareness skill under persuasion
the player can either use this skill or the default perception.

A little like the willpower resisting the force

I use a skill called Spot under Perception. You roll it for spot checks and initiative.

After a suggestion here I have used Tactics to roll initiative. It worked quite well.

Thanks. Mine was a derived stat by this formula: DEX + PER -1D +1 pip for every D of Tactics +1 pip for every D of Sense

For one, it allows characters with a lower Perception to get a boost for Initiative if they have a higher Dexterity. And while it can't be improved directly, it can be improved by improving the components of the formula. Advancement will just happen more slowly than if it were a regular skill.

Nexx, IMO it could be unbalancing for characters to have an Initiative skill, but I've never done that so don't know from experience. And even with a regular Initiative skill, it still has to be under one attribute or another. My way keeps Perception involved but brings Dexterity into it as well.

A friend of mine just suggested a "flat" 2D initiative dice to all, roll and determine order.

For some that would have naturally or through training better than average reflexes, they get +1 to the roll pr 1D above 2D in Percaption

so a person with 3D Perception (or dex for that matter) would roll 2D+1
a person with 4D in Perception (or Dex) would roll 2D+2etc
now a character with 5D would get 2D+3 etc.

Also if you have 2D+1 or 2D+2 to perception compared to someone with 2D, you will go first on equal initiavive roll.

so Joe has 3D perception and he rolls 2D+1 initiative
Bolo has 3D+1 Perception but also roll 2D+1 for intiative, when both Joe and Bolo rolls the same Bolo rects first

I've seen someone who had an advance skill for perception, called spacial awareness that was what they used for initiatives.. IT had several specialties..
Ground, Vehicle, Atmospheric, Space (fighter), Space (Capital)..
IIRC he had it where it required 3d PER, 4d search, and 4d Tactics to get... BUT once it got higher than your PER, IT took over being rolled for your initiative...

I'm thinking a variation on the D6 Space Strength Damage rule: Initiative is either Perception or 1/2 of Search.
