Best character I ever made was an orphan... Opens up all kinds of possibilities, the least of which is the ever-appealing trope of connecting with newly discovered family.
The orphan story for my character brought with it a mentor, a nemesis, a character quirk (sometimes called "disadvantages" in some games), and a campaign hook along with myriad opportunities for GM-conceived NPCs from the character's background. _________________ .

I currently play an orphan.
The orphan part is for the part character flawor, but I chose the cross species adoption.
my Character was raised by Zabraks, as a human I have none of the Zabrak species abilities. but I have a "free" language and "free" checks on culture and such.
I basically adopted and "use" the cultural aspects. While not gaining a Bonus to Piloting, the "adoption" and the culture raised in made me place +2d to at least one "piloting" skill.
We had one playing a human raised by Nagai, he was proficient with the nagai blades, spoke Nagi etc, but was human.
now what we also did and sometimes still do with "adoptees" or orphan is try use this as a hook for missions, not a full campaign usually |
