We have heard of the graveyard of Aldreaan, the asteroid field left after the destruction, and the resettlement efforts with pieces of the old death star.

My question is mostly for thought: Didn't Aldreaan have any moons?
Why could not these be settled.

what monns if any did aldreaan have, did they have atmosphere like some other moons?

just a thought

Alderaan did not have a moon. This has been mentioned in several recent Princess Leia books.

Not that Star Wars is beholden to science, but there is a scientific answer as to why not. The graveyard still has the net mass of Alderaan but its gravity would begin to diminish as the chunks of planet flew outward from each other at the point of the explosion. Some of the chucks would fly outward and some inward but a lot would probably become an asteroid field in Alderaan's orbit. That's probably what the graveyard is, the chunks that continue orbiting its star where the planet once did. (Our system's asteroid field is possibly a failed planet that could never completely form due to the gravity from Jupiter being so great).

Alderaan is a terrestrial planet of a similar size to Earth. That right there makes it unlikely to have any moons that are inhabitable to earthlike species such as humans. Earth's moon is quite unique in our solar system even being as big as it is - All the other moons of bodies with planet status are much smaller fractions of the size of their planet. The reason for that is because our Moon is actually a combination of another planet and proto-Earth resulting from an early collision. Our Moon is not massive enough to have enough gravity to maintain an atmosphere, so earthlike life like humans wouldn't be able to survive there. The moons is Star Wars that are habitable and planetlike are Earth-sized moons of much larger gas giant planets.

What Alderaan could have had is another planet of a similar size, meaning it could be part of double planet system of two planets that revolve around a center of gravity and orbit their star together as a pair. Such a sister planet could be like Alderaan. But then what would happen to it when Alderaan got destroyed? It would be extremely unlikely for it to have been traveling just right at the exact moment Alderaan was destroyed to assume a stable lone orbit around its star, so it is likely that once the mass of the graveyard dispersed so much the sister planet would shoot off either on its way out of the system (where it would freeze) or into its star (where it would burn up). But even in the unlikely event it did stay in its orbit, it would probably eventually become bombarded with chunks of Alderaan so would not be habitable for long.

It's also not likely that there is another Goldilocks zone planetary orbit in the same star system, but another habitable planet in a different planetary orbit is still a better possibility than a moon or twin planet of Alderaan.

As Kytross pointed out, surviving Alderaanians have colonized planets in other star systems, which is a bit more realistic.

In the Rebel Force series of books, Alderaan had a sister world Delaya.

According to Wookieepedia:
Quote:
Delaya was so close to Alderaan that it was clearly visible in Alderaan's sky. Alderaan outsourced much of its industry to Delaya, creating a planet with a large population and many urban areas filled with factories and warehouses as well as homes. Delaya's busy economy attracted workers from many species, including Bothans, Besalisk, Ryn, and Humans. After the destruction of Alderaan, Delaya was the only planet in the system that supported life. It was significantly smaller than Alderaan.

I doubt such a world could exist for long with Alderaan's debris expanding throughout the system and beyond, but then again, it's Star Wars.

That's right Ryan. That sparked a memory that before Disney SW, I had written an adventure synopsis that involved this planet a bit. The adventure served the role that Rogue One fills in canon now. I never ran, or even fully developed, the adventure.

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Alderaan_system/Legends

The planets of the Alderaan system could be closer together than ours, but Delaya is another terrestrial planet in the system which could possibly have a wider goldilocks zone than ours. At night with the absence of light pollution, Earth humans can see five other planets in our system with the naked eye (granted, the two farthest ones are gas giants). Our consecutive inward planet Venus could be destroyed and it wouldn't likely be catastrophic for Earth.

Alderaan is a very Earthlike planet. If that Wookieepedia sentence means that Delaya is visible to Alderaanians in the daytime, then yeah it would have to be close enough that Alderaan's destruction would be catastrophic to it. But the only way it could really be visible in the daytime would be if it were a sister-planet to Alderaan in the same planetary orbit which would mean it would likely be toast when Alderaan is destroyed.

According to Wookieepedia's Alderaan system entry, Alderaan and Delaya did not share an orbit so Delaya should have only been visible to Alderaanians at night. It also indicates that the Graveyard of Alderaan is an asteroid field in Alderaan's former orbit, which means that the bulk of the debris didn't propel to other orbits. Delaya remaining habitable after Alderaan's destruction does not offend my sense of verisimilitude, especially with SW tech of planetary shields and starships with tractor beams that could take care of any occasional chunks of Alderaan that made it out that far.

Wookieepedia also indicates that Alderaan did have a moon, but the moon's entry does mention that sources conflict as to whether Alderaan has a moon or not. I still feel there is no way the moon could have supported life after, or even before, Alderaan's destruction. So Mamatried, I would go with Delaya.
