				| Oh wow. Did they say why they were shutting down? I know they were scaling back over there, but this isn't a good look when you shut down official forums. _________________

I thought they lost the license?

 From Wikipedia:

"In December of 2019 through January of 2020 Asmodee announced they were moving towards focusing on Fantasy Flight Games' core boardgame-, dice- and card- games and are abandoning support for tabletop role-playing games like Star Wars and Genesys. Tabletop game materials still in development would be finished and supposedly published, but stocks of existing materials would not be replenished."

The announcement didn't give a reason why, but as discussed in the above thread, FFG discontinued production of all RPGs. (The RPG part of their Star Wars game license is supposedly being transferred to Edge Studios, who was supposed to reprint prior FFG Star Wars books and also produce new ones, but as far as I can tell there has been no movement on that front.) FFG seems to be downsizing, so the free community forums probably seem extraneous, especially without active RPG lines to support.

StarWars.com used to have an official free forum (which I believe was my first online forum). They discontinued it in 2011, probably to slim down franchise operating costs to present as high as possible profit margin figures in negotiations with Disney. Star Wars wasn't in trouble financially, while there are indications that FFG may be in trouble so are trying to stay afloat.

				| Thinking about it, a lot of this stuff might be closing because of Facebook. Sure, Facebook doesn't have some of the archival features of forums (Here's a post from 2003! It can vote this year!, but it also completely outsources and centralizes the message board infrastructure. If I want forums discussing Dark Sun, Star Wars d6, Savage Worlds, and Shaddowrun, I can get all those on Facebook, where I often am, anyway.
There are a lot of reasons why this is not ideal, but it meets people where they are AND saves companies money.

Sure. I'm sure Facebook may be what corporate execs give as an excuse to close forums. "Fans have other options." But those decisions are never made by those who use the forums.

When Loc Taal announced to the Pit moderators that he wanted to close the Rancor Pit, he floated the idea of us starting a Facebook group to replace it. Despite the convenience because the moderators were already on Facebook, I was horrified by the suggestion because it is a totally different format. Sure, you can discuss any game or hobby in a Facebook group, but there is no forum category structure and it is difficult to find things unless it is a very recent discussion. Despite the 2005 vibe here, on Facebook we'd lose more features than we'd gain. Plus all existing Rancor Pit discussions would be lost! And we would lose independence and be subject to Facebook guidelines and advertisements. So I decided to dive in and save the Rancor Pit so it could continue in its overall superior format and independence from corporations. Since 2003, we are by the fans, for the fans.

I do sympathize with fans of the FFG games losing their official forums. In looking at it, they have a lot of similar types of discussions that we have for our game here (but more requests for RAW clarifications and less tinkering). There is nothing stopping any of them from making a fan forum like the Pit but devoted to FFG Star Wars. I hope they do since it seems like there are a lot of people who still play the game.

Or, for that matter, taking the FFG discussions to the Pit itself, in the Other Star Wars Games section. You could be like unto a god, Whill. Like. Unto. A. GOD.

If enough FFG SW players wanted to come here I would be happy to open a new category just for FFG Star Wars. But unfortunately it seems my divine powers are too weak to be their messiah. I had come across mention of this closure earlier this month on Facebook but forgot about it, so I didn't have time for an advance welcome there to come here. They have a forum devoted to the WEG 31st Anniversary Box Set and last night I tried to post there but I can't because they must have a moderation tool that requires "new" user posts to be approved by staff (a spam filtering tactic). My profile is not new - I created an account there almost two years ago in 2018. My first attempted post back then was my Gilligan's Island meme about the extreme delay of the box set, which one of their moderators elected to deny (it was just a harmless joke, but I also included a link to here). I didn't try to post anything again until last night. It still isn't approved. Now that the forum is about to end, they may not be bothering to approve new user posts. Before last night, I hadn't been to the forum since November, and the closure was not announced until December 21st.

Oh well. C'est la vie. I literally saved the Rancor Pit from extinction so that will probably be it for my "divine" interventions.

				| It's too bad for those fans.
And I'm sure glad that you decided to keep the Rancor Pit (thanks, Whill!). I can't access FB (or any other social media site) from work, whereas I can visit the Rancor Pit just fine.

Glad you're still around too, Doug.

The Rancor Pit has been here since before the PT was even done. The Pit has now seen the release of Revenge of the Sith, the Disney sale and five new films, the rise and fall of two post-WEG Star Wars RPGs (and their forums), a new steward taking over the site, and a lot more.

				| Most of the major RPG publishers have shut their forums over the past few years. It’s an extra expense most companies find no value in because of cost and the fact there are places like Facebook and Discord channels which offer the same functionality to fans. | |
