Here is a quick write up for HER (yes a she!!)

Commander Tox, was a strange one at the academy. Always looking for those who lied to the teachers, she was known as a snitch. This attracted the customs bureau and ISB to her, which, when she graduated, she allowed to barter to gain her services. She eventually went with ISB and stayed there for almost 7 years, before crossing to the Customs bureau. She loves her job there, finding those hauling illegal shipments or using forged paperwork. It is cause of her tenacity and inflexibility, in regards to bribes’ she has advanced so quickly to the rank of commander.

Ahh... no offense to HER... She had all that hair tucked up under her uniform cap... 8)
From your information here, she sounds like a brown-noser, not someone who's on the take (unless I'm misunderstanding here). In that case I'd HIGHLY recommend the players do some snooping to find out if she could possibly be bribed. Everything they find out (provided the rolls are good enough) should point to the fact that this woman loves to be bribed- so she can throw some scumbag into the brig. The only way I'd have any information to the contrary would be either for such a catastrophically dismal roll that they couldn't tell you how to spell 'cat' from the information they got, or if they ask someone who'd be out to get them, who would of course feed them misinformation.

Only real problem there, is since the 'inspection; she is (one of the 8 customs people) on was 'spur of the moment (basically IMP intel got wind of several stolen ships coming into sector X so they decided to use a less known article in the imperial BOSS law, requiring 5 year safety checks on all ships, private and public. So they are in wait, grabbing all ships in that sector, and she is the one the pcs get. SO how would htye know she is there, to even try to gather info on her...

Ah. Now we're finally getting enough information to give you an informed answer.

With THAT information added in, I'd say there's only a couple of ways they might have information on her. Maybe they'd have gotten wind of 'beefed-up Imperial Customs inspections for some trumped-up reason' through other spacers they encounter, (or perhaps Alliance Intel even) so they could get information on ALL Customs officers on station. (This might not give info on anyone recently stationed there, so this could still be a bust, but it'd be an effort on their part.) Perhaps they heard specifically about some 'crazy Imperial witch Customs Officer with a womprat up her hindquarters' from some legitimate freighter captains who got stopped and searched in that sector and had their schedules completely thrown off by the time she took from them.

If they get info on everyone stationed there, they'd need to do that close to the time they jump in there. Even 'spur of the moment' orders are still orders. They have to be cut at command and sent down the pike, whether hand-carried or transmitted ahead of time. Yes, sometimes these orders are delayed (trust me, I'm a vet. I know!). If you go that route, you'll have to make the determination ahead of time how long they're delayed, and compare that to when the players make their checks.

I know this is a long shot, but it's something you could work out, if you were so inclined. Otherwise, your players are going to be in trouble- especially if they haven't prepared themselves for this eventuality.

And in this particular case, it's going to take some serious good luck on the characters' parts to be able to get this information. However, in most other circumstances, the suggestions given thus far are perfectly legitimate and reasonable ones. They should work as long as everyone works it out. And again, if the players themselves manage to bring off some excellent roleplaying during this process, but their dice rolls aren't quite up to snuff, you could always throw them tiny pieces of information as a reward- keeping in mind that it doesn't have to necessarily be accurate information. Or, they might find a clue to another approach they might take to get some information. That way you don't have to 'fudge the dice' but can still give them some kind of reward for getting into the game so well.

That might work.... emphasis on the might....

What would you suggest for rolls to make (and their diff) to actually find out the info?
