It really helps - not just in inventory control - but in that it helps the players remember as well. "oh look, I have a smoke grenade.." or "we are down to 3 medpacs...".
The party used a smoke grenade in a big scene in a recent adventure - I am fairly confident that it was because I had the players hand the cards out at the beginning of the session (they had the grenades for like six sessions...never remembered - used them the second session they had the cards).
On the stats - yes, I try to put all the relevant stats on the card - some times it can be tricky (a few items may have multiple rules attached).
love hearing about and seeing the gaming aids others have created!

That is one reason, when i run 2e adnd, i LOVE using Spell and Item cards as well.. There's been times they've forgotten they HAD XYZ, even with it being wrote on their cha sheet.. BUT when they have those 3x5 index cards to go through, they remember a lot more..
