B1-series Battle Droid
The B1-series battle droid—also called standard battle droid, clanker or tinny—was the Trade Federation’s mass-production infantry unit and later the backbone of the Separatist Droid Army. Designed by Geonosian engineers and manufactured primarily by Baktoid Combat Automata and Baktoid Armor Workshop under the Techno Union, the B1 was cheap, modular, and easy to ship and store. Individually flimsy and dim-witted, B1s were nevertheless dangerous in overwhelming numbers and could operate in vacuum, underwater, and hostile environments where organic troops faltered.
After the Battle of Naboo, when the destruction of a Droid Control Ship disabled an entire field army, most B1s were retrofitted for local autonomy. Even so, the Separatists continued to use centralized control where it made tactical sense (fleet nodes, fortress networks), yielding a mixed force of slaved and independent units throughout the Clone Wars. Following Order 66 and the Separatist shutdown, surviving B1s persisted in holdouts, on the black market, and later as repurposed labor or security units.
Design & Capabilities
Form Factor: Humanoid, 1.93 meters tall; folding limbs for compact stowage (e.g., high-density MTT transport). Chassis silhouette echoes Geonosian aesthetics; Neimoidian “skull” resemblance became a persistent rumor.
Power & Sensors: Rechargeable power cells (~two standard days typical operation); audio/IR sensors; simple vocabulators (voices varied by firmware generation).
Comms: Integrated multichannel comlink (often augmented by a backpack booster in line units).
Armor & Structure: Light frame; electromagnetic limb couplings prone to being shot apart; receiver assembly somewhat protected, but the head/cogitator remained the most decisive target.
Control Architecture
Early Batches: Central Control Computer links from Droid Control Ships or fortified nodes.
Post-Naboo: Widespread independence retrofits with low-end local cogitators; many formations still used overlay networks for mass maneuver/updates (e.g., Malevolence task force).
Weapons & Kit (common)
E-5 blaster rifle, SE-14 pistol, thermal detonators; squad macrobinoculars; mission-paint/camo where needed. Heavy or specialist teams fielded E-5C repeaters, RPS-6 rockets, or role gear.
Programming
Fourth-degree combat logic capped for cost; later firmware gained limited initiative but also quirks/chatter as memories fragmented or roles exceeded design limits.
Combat Performance & Tactics
Strengths: Mass production; environmental resilience; compatibility with humanoid equipment; easy to coordinate under a node; acceptable as gunners, drivers, and basic ship’s crew.
Weaknesses: Slow reactions, poor use of cover, brittle frame, and ion/EMP susceptibility; readily spoofed or confused by contradictory inputs unless supervised by a tactical droid or competent commander.
Doctrine: Swarm and saturate. B1s in parade ranks or simple rushes pinned foes while heavier assets (droidekas, B2/B3, armor, artillery) delivered the decision. Programming quality improved modestly over the war but never matched clone adaptability.
History
Trade Federation era -> Naboo (32 BBY): B1s seized Theed and fought the Gungan army on the Great Grass Plains; the Droid Control Ship’s destruction hard-killed the force and exposed the central-control vulnerability.
Between Naboo and Geonosis: Production relocated/expanded in extra-Republican space (notably Geonosis). B1s received local autonomy refits and were repurposed as pilots, gunners, and responders—roles they could perform, though often poorly.
Clone Wars (22–19 BBY): By far the most numerous Separatist soldiers, deployed in virtually every campaign (Geonosis, Muunilinst, Cato Neimoidia, Coruscant, Kashyyyk, Ryloth, Felucia, Dathomir). CIS used a mixed control model: autonomous B1s alongside node-directed formations and tactical droid supervision.
Imperial Era: Galactic Empire outlawed combat droids like the B1 and issued shutdown orders; exceptions persisted (e.g., Kalani’s remnant). Reactivated or repurposed B1s appeared with pirates, crime syndicates, warlords, and curiosities (e.g., Mister Bones, R0-GR, Bedlam Raiders on Koboh). Imperial propaganda cemented their reputation as incompetent, though massed or well-handled B1s could still be lethal.
New Republic and Beyond: Many B1s were scrapped, museum-kept, or refitted for civil tasks (e.g., Plazir-15). Illicit stocks continued to surface across the Rim.
Variants & Roles
OOM-series (mark/sub-line of B1): Expanded programming with color codes by function—yellow (command), red (security), blue (pilot)—serving as section leaders, controllers, or specialists.
AAT Driver Battle Droid: B1s with driver/gunner firmware, jungle camo/role markings, and improved obstacle recognition for Armored Assault Tanks.
Heavy/Repeater, Rocket, Grenade, and Grapple B1s: Field expedient or factory kits to mount repeaters, rockets, grenades, or melee grapples.
Recon B1: Light kits with enhanced optics and patrol routines.
Melee B1 (post-war refits): Independent melee-program units (e.g., Bedlam Raiders), often with stun poles/electropoles.
Firefighter/Worker Conversions: Shipboard or industrial refits (e.g., Malevolence firefighters; Karina’s workers).
Rocket-Pack "escape-pod hunters": Limited-issue space pursuit kit with orange/black livery.
Technical Summary
Creator: Geonosian designers; Baktoid/Techno Union production (Geonosis primary, with other foundries such as Kudo III, Akiva).
Class/Degree: Battle droid, fourth-degree.
Dimensions: 1.93 m tall; 65 kg.
Sensors: Black-lensed photoreceptors.
Armor: Light plating; + survivability only in numbers; head/capacitor cluster remains a prime target.
Armament: E-5 blaster rifle; sidearm SE-14; grenades as issued; mission variants (E-5C, RPS-6, etc.).
Cost (wartime new unit): 1,800 credits per combat-configured shell (mass contracts varied widely); demilitarized frames substantially cheaper on the post-war market.
Affiliations (primary): Trade Federation → Confederacy of Independent Systems; later Separatist holdouts, pirates/criminal syndicates, isolated Imperial/Remnant experiments, and scattered civil governments via repurposing.

OOM Pilot Battle Droid
Battle droids were designated by their dull yellow markings on their bodies. The droids possessed enhanced cognitive and tactical modules, and were used to lead droid forces. However, the droids were often subservient to organic officers or tactical droids, but in the absence of their higher officer an OOM command battle droid was able to take control of military forces.

AAT Driver Battle Droid
Also known as AAT Driver Droids, jungle battle droids, and as Kashyyyk Battle Droids, were a variant of the B1-series battle droid used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. They had tactical camouflage markings that both allowed them to blend into jungles and designated their role as tank operators. Droids of this model were deployed in Armored Assault Tanks. Modified B1-series battle droids, designed to pilot Armored Assault Tanks. They were equipped with specialized programming that improved their reaction times and helped them detect enemies and obstacles more quickly than the standard B1 units. The driver droids were also given combat programming. Driver droids had green flares so they could be quickly identified.

B1 Rocket Battle Droid
Otherwise known as pod hunters, were a 1.9 meter tall variant of the B1-series battle droid upgraded for the sole purpose of destroying escape pods. They were equipped with E-5 blaster rifles, rocket packs, and fusioncutters, and were painted orange and black in order to distinguish them from other B1s. The B1-series rocket battle droids' rocket packs were hardwired into their backs and they enabled the droids to maneuver in space. The droids' fusioncutters were built into their arms, while they also had head-mounted lamps.
When operating in a group, they were capable of piloting Droch-class boarding ships that could attach to most pod designs and breach pods to depressurize the interior, which often killed the occupants without having to utilize blasters. For the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which relied on secrecy to survive, this was a distasteful tactic.
Despite being well-equipped for specialized and grisly operations, B1 rocket battle droids had a variable track record. Sometimes B2 super rocket troopers were used in their place, with their B1 counterparts being relegated to other short-range space missions or used as aerial troopers during planetary encounters.

In atmosphere, short hops only Move 50; maximum safe altitude 100 m; fuel for 10 minutes of cumulative thrust. Mishap: on a failed Jet pack operation roll by 5+, the droid tumbles and must spend an action to recover)
Integrated Forearm Fusioncutter (as a breaching tool, adds +1D to appropriate Security/Repair checks for cutting doors and pod hulls; cutting times per GM. As a melee weapon, Damage 4D; against inanimate objects/doors/hulls, ignores 2D of armor/body)
Head-Mounted Lamp (counts as a glow rod; negates poor-light penalties within 10 meters in the droid’s forward arc)

Availability: 4, X
Game Notes: When operating a Droch-class boarding craft, use space transports to clamp to an escape pod (15, modified by target motion). Breaching is typically a Security roll (20) or timed fusioncutter use. Depressurizing follows standard vacuum exposure rules.
Constrained Cognition: Persuasion or con vs perception with contradictory/illogical cues; on success the droid hesitates 1 round; on failure it broadcasts an alert as a free action.

B1 Firefighter Battle Droid
Regular B1s that were remodeled to be effective at fighting fires within Separatist warships and installations. They were developed by Baktoid Combat Automata for cost reasons, being easier to remodel B1 droids for firefighting rather than develop a specialized firefighter droid. They had masculine programming, black sensors and dark gray plating. Their plating was adorned with red highlights and reflective yellow stripes, which was fireproof, and made them more visible in smoky conditions. They did have combat training, albeit limited, they could spray fire-repellent foam on the ground so their opponents would slip. The firefighter battle droids received specialized programming that helped them respond to emergencies, while altered backpacks held their firefighting gear. The firefighter droids were equipped with a fire hose and a fire extinguisher. Their hoses could emit a pressurized foam, and their backpacks had a supply of fire-resistant chemicals. As B1s were considered to not be particularly intelligent, they would sometimes be knocked over by the recoil of their own hose
