I also did a Jedi Master based on Sean Connery, complete with accent.

But how do you keep that from being a distracting parody? There are some accents, Sean Connery, but Arnold Schwarzenegger would be right there as well, that are so attached to a celebrity that it would cause people to immediately revert to their disbelief, rather than continue to suspend it.

I love doing accents to get into character(s) - in fact, it's a must for me - but I find I cant go near the celebrity accents without getting heckled for it by the (other) players.

I have no idea how I've gotten away with it as long as I have. That probably has to do a lot with the fact that my players know that I'm doing it more for effect than to parody someone. I've always done voices and the fact that the character was visually based on Connery from the 'The Rock' when they pull him out of the solitary confinement cell, as well as sounding like him made all the difference in the world...

I also once voiced a Jawa who sounded like and had the mannerisms of Marlon Brando from 'The Godfather'...It sounds funny (Lord only knows it got some laughs...LOL) but the players took it serious enough to play out the scene...

Having lived in the UK, though I am kind of surprised you didn't include the French in the list of bad guy accents. Wink Maybe a short Grand Moff with an itchy torso? Laughing

There were French bad guys in Star Wars, but they all ran away.
I totally sent you up for that line. Very Happy

You certainly did. I was irresistably compelled.

Napolean once asked a captured British officer why they wore such brilliantly colored red uniform jackets. The captured officer replied that if an officer became wounded the jackets color hid the blood and would therefore not lower the moral of the troops he commanded. Napolean considered that response for a few minutes, and to this day the French army wears brown trousers.

Not sure how I missed this post but in our longest running Star Wars game we have a few go to accents/speech patterns.

The player who plays the quarren will actually gargle his words. After a while we all began to understand what he was saying without any translation required.

The Esoomian (played by me) was unable to produce sibilant sounds, replacing them instead with a double ff. This caused a few issues when I tried a new battle cry on a whim. Suck space pirate scum was perhaps not the best choice. As Esooma is quarantined and under Imperial law Esoomians are not permitted to leave their home planet this character has a number of disguises most of which make use of software adapted from a translator droid. This gives him an almost uptight parody of an English accent.

The other characters generally stick with neutral accents unless they’re in disguise in which case they tend to go for Germanic accents for some reason.

I wish my players bothered with voices. Or accents. Or character.
