What is the difference between these 2? Is one a buffer for messages, until they are read by the receipient, or something??

That seems to be the case. I have a whole boatload of messages in my "Sent" box, but only three in my "Out" box. Those three coincide with messages I haven't received responses to, so I imagine they've not been read by the recipients yet.
