Another way to do that would be to ome up with something that messes with sensors. Not a jammer, or even a cloaking device, but maybe something that could absorb sensor emmisons. Basically steath, but not quite a cloak.

I'm hesitant to come up with new tech when old tech is available that works just as well. An entire story has built up around cloaking devices being hideously expensive and exceedingly rare, all over Captain Needa's ESB quote "No ship that small has a cloaking device", and I have never been entirely fond of where that story went.

You could evern have "bombs" of the stuff that would block sensors going though a certain radius. The "sub" could saturate an area. Like an octopus' ink cloud.

I stole a piece of tech from Timothy Zahn's Conquerors trilogy that does something similar: Static Bombs (basically a big cloud of persistent energy that disrupts sensors, fire control and communications for a short period of time, allowing a ship to escape). I also crossed-over his Copperhead fight concept, but I digress...

And just to be perverse, the sub could use some sortof "subspace" based sensors that can "see" through the interference.

Way ahead of you. SUDAR. Subspace Detection and Ranging.
