I'm hesitant to come up with new tech when old tech is available that works just as well. An entire story has built up around cloaking devices being hideously expensive and exceedingly rare, all over Captain Needa's ESB quote "No ship that small has a cloaking device", and I have never been entirely fond of where that story went.

I stole a piece of tech from Timothy Zahn's Conquerors trilogy that does something similar: Static Bombs (basically a big cloud of persistent energy that disrupts sensors, fire control and communications for a short period of time, allowing a ship to escape). I also crossed-over his Copperhead fight concept, but I digress...
