I just read an excellent Star Wars story. I mean, this story is truly one of the best. As I was reading it, I thought to myself, "THIS! Some of THIS is what is missing from the new films."
It should be required reading for anyone making a Star Wars movie.
The story is called Extinction, and it's the first story in the first volume of Dark Horse's Tales series (that collects one-offs and various here and there stories published during DH's tenure).
It's a very simple story. The artwork is fantastic. But, what makes the story truly great is that it has some real emotion in it. And, it grasps at what it truly is to be a Jedi. |

If I had to rate the short new Marvel mini-series (not the long series), here's how I'd rate them.
1. LANDO - is outstanding!
2. HAN SOLO - Also very, very good.
3. CHEWBACCA - Loved it!
4. CAPTAIN PHASMA - How Phasma gets off Starkiller base.
5. C-3PO - How 3P0 gets the red arm.
6. SHATTERED EMPIRE - Post Jedi. Poe's parents. Han as a commando general!
7. PRINCESS LEIA - C'mon...Marvel can do better. It's OK.
Haven't read yet...
Thrawn
Cassian & K-2S0
Darth Maul
Mace Windu
Obi-wan & Anakin |

I'm reading Obi-wan & Anakin now. It started a bit slow, but it did grab me. It deals a bit with Anakin's issue with patience and his questioning of the Jedi Order. It's a good book. I'm enjoying.
About half way though the book, Obi-wan makes an interesting comment:
Quote: | Anakin is...important. He has extraordinary potential. Both with respect to his own abilities and in his ability to affect the balance of Good and Evil in the universe. |
This goes back to the "Chosen One" idea.
If you think about it, Anakin ultimately chose Evil (before being saved by Luke), and the galaxy plunged into years and years of war.
The Clones Wars.
The Galactic Civil War.
And now, the Resistance against the First Order. |

I thought Lando was FANTASTIC! I really liked it.
Shattered Empire was pretty good. I liked seeing Han as a SpecForce commander. I thought that they did a good job on that.

Yeah, the new Darth Vader series picks up right as RofS ends. There's a Darth Maul comic. And, there's a Mace Windu comic, to. Haven't read any of those yet. |

I started the second volume of the Star Wars Doctor Aphra series today. This series is flat out FANTASTIC! I can't decide if this book, or the Poe Dameron book, is the best of the new Marvel Star Wars stuff (and Marvel is doing a spectacular job with just about all of the new Star Wars lines).
I love the character. She's the cutest little sociopath in the galaxy.
This book has the best representation of Trandoshans that I've ever seen since the race first appeared in TESB. |

What are you looking for? The old 70's Marvel comics?
Marvel has reprinted them in a super omnibus. 880 pages! 44 issues plus the first Annual. That's over 3 and a half years of the comic.
Right here. CLICKY, CLICKY.
If that's a bit much, you can track down the out of print Dark Horse reprint omnibuses. There are five of them, under the title A Long Time Ago.
Here's the first volume, used, for $24.99. USED CLICKY, CLICKY.
Plus, you can always check eBay. |

Spoiler time!
The Doctor Aphra Annual reveals that the wookiee, Black Krrsantan has had an enhancement where metal has been bonded to his bones. He's the Star Wars Wolverine! |

I'll note that they're FANTASTIC. They were written after ANH came out but before TESB (and went through TESB and ROTJ). They've got this...feel..this atmoshphere...that the new comics don't have.
I can't quite put my finger on it. You know how the original trilogy has an atmosphere/feel to them that is different than the prequel trilogy? And, the atmosphere/feel of RO and the two new films is different from the other two?
The original Marvel books just feel like that original trilogy. Full of hope and bright eyed Space Opera Action.
I love them. |

DOCTOR APHRA AND THE ENORMOUS PROFIT
I finished this tonight. Damn fine book. 5 Stars, no doubt.
It's an ending to the Doctor Aphra arc that has been building since the character was first seen in the Darth Vader comics. Great climax.
And, the book is funny! I don't normally laugh at comics. I smile every so often, but there are some truly comedic scenes in this book. I LOVE IT!
Here's a couple of spoilers that we've learned about Aphra over the various issues.
She's a lesbian!
She's a true sociopath!
Her first name is Chelli.
Black Krrsantan has a metal wrapped skeleton. I guess he's the Wolverine of the Star Wars universe.
Here's the reading order, if you want to start with this character.
At first, she was introduced in the now completed Darth Vader series from Marvel. This series is more about Vader than Aphra, but Aprha defintiely got her screen time. And, you will see the origin of the psycho droids, BeeTee and 000. Plus, you'll learn a lot about Black Krrsantan, too.
DARTH VADER VOL. 1 (Collections issues 1-12)
DARTH VADER VOL. 2 (Collects the rest of the series, ending in issue 25, plus the crossover, plus the annual).
Then, you'll want to start the new Doctor Aphra book...
DOCTOR APHRA VOL 1 (Collections 1-6)
THE SCREAMING CITADEL (Crossover that collects Aphra 7-8, Star Wars 31-32, plus The Screaming Citadel)
DOCTOR APHRA VOL. 2 - THE ENORMOUS PROFIT (This one concludes this long story arc. Collects Aphra 9-13 plus the Annual)
Highly Recommended.
And, Doctor Aphra will be back! In July, her adventures continue in...
DOCTOR APHRA VOL. 3 - REMASTERED |

I’ve only read the ones between SW and ESB. I didn’t like the first story, by Roy Thomas, but once Archie Goodwin took over, I agree, they NAIL that original SW feel like nothing else. I love these stories, and I am not a comic book guy at all. Eg., I have never read any other comic book, ever, and don’t particularly plan to. |

That's what I said!
Then, one day, say, five or so years ago. I'm deep into my 40's, and boom!
I read comics.
I love 'em!
For me, they're like watching films. I hear and see (sometimes smell and taste) the action.
My imagination is vivid like that. I really enjoy it. |
